What are WiFi Media Players?

Posted to Wi-Fi Media Players Articles 2009-03-04

A wireless, or Wi-Fi, media player represents the continuing integration of more and more functionality into ever more compact devices. Wi-Fi media players allow users to browse, view and listen to media and to download new media off the Internet with or without a PC.

Generally, people download media first to their PC and then transfer that media to a media player via a port on the computer. This system is very convenient but if one desires new content they are required to go through the process of downloading and transferring all over again. Wi-Fi media players are an attempt to eliminate this inconvenience.

Wi-Fi media players usually feature their own screen. Some have the capacity to output to larger screens and external speakers. They can play video and audio content and many allow users to engage in instant messaging from their device. Some of them are equipped with a miniature QWERTY keyboard to facilitate the typing involved.

They may or may not be tied to a particular web music service. Usually, manufacturers tailor their devices to work with a partnered media delivery service. Whether or not there are restrictions, users can easily download podcasts, video and music from any location where they can get a wireless signal to which they can connect. Essentially, Wi-Fi media players function as a small, mobile computer built around entertainment.

Most Wi-Fi media players work on the 802.11 g or b wireless protocol, the standard protocols used today. This means that hooking up to a network in a coffee shop, college or friend's home should present no technical difficulties. Download rates will be comparable with any other wireless networking device.

Wi-Fi media players are sometimes specialized to the task and sometimes devices that are built around other functions, such as gaming, that offer media player functions in addition to their primary purpose. There are an increasing amount of movies and other video entertainment available in the formats these players use. Most video sharing sites are also compatible with wireless media players.

These devices offer different qualities of sound and video, depending on the specific unit. Most of them have external speakers in addition to headphone jacks so that media may be shared with others.

Wi-Fi media players represent the natural progression of media players in general in the current technological marketplace. Technology is becoming smaller and increasingly less dependent upon wires. These devices are excellent for individuals who spend a great deal of time commuting or travelling. They are also suitable for home use as the output jacks allow them to be plugged into larger systems for higher quality audio output. Most come with large hard drives and some with removable storage.
