Consumer binoculars have been around for some time and the basic design has remained fairly constant over time with minimal changes. Some of these changes have been to product type such as standard, compact, zoom and image stabilized. The image stabilized model is the most recent update. The zoom binocular has also been developing more over the past few years with lens technology improving on quality. Other inroads to binoculars and the all-weather models include features such as rubber coatings, impact resistance, fog and waterproofing (adding to the binocular appeal). Things to consider when look for binoculars are magnification, focus system, objective lens, prism type, close focus, eye relief, diopter adjustment, field of view, lens coating, exit pupil, eye width adjustment, and tripod adapter. Don’t forget to look at the weight of the binocular and accessories as usually binoculars come with lens caps, case and straps.
