Apple MacBook MB467LL/A Aluminum Review

Posted to Notebooks 2009-01-28

Review: Apple MacBook Aluminum MB467LL/A Intel Core 2 Duo processor 2.4GHz/ 2GB/ 250GB HDD

Apple has continued to uphold their reputation for innovation with the introduction of the new Apple MacBook Aluminum MB467LL/A. This device includes several new technologies not seen in a notebook before. The unit features a 13.3 in, LED backlit glass (not plastic) display. It also features a Multi-Touch trackpad made from wear- resistant etched glass with no mechanical buttons, obviously inspired by the touch technology in the ipod touch and the iphone.

The third major innovation is the aluminum uni-body construction - the lower portion of the case is machined from a solid block of aluminum for more strength and light weight. And the technical specs are impressive, too. The unit features a 2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor with a 1066MHz FSB, 2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, a 250GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk and an integrated NVIDIA graphics processor with 256MB of shared memory. Connectivity options include 802.11n wireless that is backwards compatible with 802.11a/b/g routers, Built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 2 USB 2.0 ports, and a Mini Display Port compatible with DVI, VGA, and dual-link DVI connectors.

Rating:  out of 5

Features

The MB467LL/A scores well in the features department, thanks to the technological advances and advanced hardware specs for the device. There's an 8X slot loading SuperDrive (DVD/CD RW), a full-size 78 key keyboard that is backlit for use in low light situations, built-in microphone and speakers. The glass display ingeniously incorporates an iSight camera for use as a webcam and for video conferencing. Both the headphone out and line in jacks are combined optical/digital connections and a Kensington lock slot is included. The unit uses a 45-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery that provides 5 hours of operation, and comes preloaded with the Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system that includes the iLIfe '08 suite of applications.

Performance

Performance of the MB467LL/A is stellar, with the glass LED backlit display providing truly outstanding results. The keyboard is more than roomy enough for touch typists and the processing speed is among the best in class. This unit has all the connectivity options you'll need, including a 10/100/1000BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet, and the built-in webcam and speakers provide excellent output. The DVD drive delivers acceptable performance while still conserving battery life, the 250GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard disk drive is fast, and the 2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM truly complements the dual processor.

Summary

You won't find a notebook with more technological advances packed into one product. The LED backlit glass display is a joy to use, the new glass touchpad incorporates all sorts of new touch gestures, and the backlit, contoured keyboard incorporates a much needed feature in a laptop. The hardware specs provide best in class performance and the whole package measures only 12.78 x 8.94 x 0.95 in. and weighs in at a mere 4.5 lbs. So whether you're a serious road warrior or a photographer needing a mobile studio and darkroom, this product deserves serious consideration. Yes, it's pricey as is usual with Macs, but is well worth the price if it's within your budget range.
