While I am a huge fan of standard definition camcorders, there is no bias here when saying, even in this category; the flash memory Panasonic SDR-SW20 is right where it is expected to be. It appeals to the active user, being waterproof, drop-proof, and dust-proof, but the challenges are the small buttons because of its size. Price is definitely in line with those first time camcorder buyers, but if you're planning to use this for advanced video photography, then you may need to keep shopping. Compared to cameras in the same category, the buttons aren't nearly as accessible and the hand strap, because of its size, is unreliable.
QualityBecause of the price and all the safety features installed, the overall video quality put simply, is okay. I suppose if this is for the younger outdoor enthusiasts or a parent buying for an active son or daughter, this camcorder will do the job. If you want to spend time at the beach or shooting videos around the backyard pool, then that is where the quality will shine. Finally, there is a camcorder that can provide adequate protection for the active videographer. ValueThis is a camcorder, so to me, video quality is at least, the first thing I am going to look at when buying. While the Panasonic SW20 is on the lower end of the pricing scale, dropping that kind of cash for a family member or friend might simply not be feasible. Although, it is amazing how much abuse the SW20 can take, and since there is little degradation of video quality, it simply makes economic sense to invest for the right person. FeaturesFor the price, finding a camcorder that records underwater is a great deal. There is even an underwater button which quickly adjust audio and colors for underwater use. Also note the small rubber rings perform very well when properly cared for, like any camcorder you may purchase. The water proofing of the case makes the buttons slow to respond at times. In terms of video quality, I have seen excellent images on a 28 inch TV. I guess it's greatest short coming is the inability to shoot in low light. So when you are at the beach and the sun is shinning, you definitely get a respectable image. ErgonomicsNice and small, fits into your hand and looks fantastic. I gave this an above average rating because with all the rugged features to protect the camcorder, it's only drawback is the small strap. It's reliable, because it also has a 4 foot drop protection which allows it to be used and abused. Another nice feature is the two record buttons, allowing you to easily start recording regardless if you're holding it under or over handed. The Panasonic SW20, because of some cool features, is too innovative to be forgotten. SummaryIf you're an extreme sports person and want a camcorder to stand up to some punishment, then the SW20 can hold its own. However, prepare for detail to be minimal in low light, but great when the sun is shining. Plan on using this footage on a DVD, with any DVD burner all you need is a USB cable. Even for a standard definition camera; with all its ruggedness, the Panasonic SDR-SW20 still finishes high up the rating when it comes to having fun with your camcorder. Pros
