D-Link DSM-750: Review
Review: D-Link DSM-750

The D-Link DSM-750 WiFi Media Player allows you to stream video, music and photos from your computer directly to your television without annoying wires. Using an existing router you can set up the device in mere minutes and watch streaming video on your television. The device can deal with resolutions up to 1080i for the perfect high definition experience, why they didn't go the full nine yards with 1080p I will never know.

The D-Link DSM-750 offers consumers a lot in the way of services but the fact that it only supports a limited number of formats is a significant downside. WMP and MPEG-4 seems to be the only working formats, or at least the only ones that people are not having significant problems with. While the reason for such limited format compatibility is unclear it puts a real kink in the device for many consumers.

Rating:  3.0 out of 5

Quality

The quality of this product has been called into question since its release and D-Link does not seem to be in a rush to rectify the problems. Glitches in the software and freezing problems are widely reported issues and plenty of users have replaced device after device that simply continue not to function properly.

The device is confined in a good looking case. The smoked-out appearance casing and slim design makes it basically blend into the area it is in creating a great appearance but when a device is difficult to get working the appearance of the casing doesn't matter all that much.

Value

The D-Link system fits in well with competing devices in terms of price range but additional devices including extenders can really push the price point up. Limited format options and glitches in the software make the price a bit too much for what people are getting. Significant problems have been reported with the customer service offered by D-Link as well and if you ever need support you will probably end the call frustrated.

Summary

The D-Link DSM-750 system is a great idea, and it would have been a great device if the company had spent a bit more time testing out the product and working out glitches with the software. Experts are suggesting that most of the problems experienced by people have little to do with the device and everything to do with a poorly designed set-up wizard and software program and that seems to be about on point with what many owners are saying. This device falls under the category of "could have been great".

Pros

  • Competitive price point
  • Attractive casing

Cons

  • Poor Customer Service is a problem
  • Limited accepted formats
  • Glitchy software
