The Garmin Geko 301 is a very capable and inexpensive handheld GPS unit. It is a compact, 12-channel GPS unit housed in a waterproof case - the unit can withstand immersion in up to 1 meter of water for a period of up to 30 minutes. It features a high contrast display with a resolution of 100 x 64 pixels. The unit is WAAS-enabled for 3 meter accuracy and features a built-in electronic compass and barometric altimeter.

The unit is capable of storing up to 500 waypoints and 20 routes with 125 waypoints per route. The user interface features only five buttons for easy one-handed operation. The unit will operate for up to 12 hours on 2 AAA batteries and includes a serial PC interface. The Geko 301 is one of the smallest and lightest waterproof GPS units on the market. The unit also comes with 5 interactive games.

The Geko 301 is one of the most reasonably priced waterproof GPS units on the market. If you just need basic GPS features, it makes an excellent choice, especially for outdoorsmen. It includes a very capable trip computer, and although the display is small, it provides all the information you need for reliable navigation. The 5-button user interface is very user-friendly, with a menu system that is very intuitive. The five included games are an added bonus.

The Geko 301 has all the features you need for basic navigation, The unit has a very readable display, even in bright sunlight. And as mentioned, the unit is small and lightweight - the unit measures a mere 1.9 x 3.9 x 0.96 inches and weighs only 3.4 ounces with batteries. One negative aspect is the serial interface - any PC-connected device should use USB these days. The electronic compass and barometric altimeter are useful additions to the basic GPS functionality.

Summary

If you're looking for an inexpensive, no-frills weatherproof handheld GPS unit, the Geko 301 makes an excellent choice. It has all the features you really need for basic navigation, and its light weight and small size make it very portable. The unit will easily fit in a coat or pants pocket and won't weigh you down in the least. All in all an excellent offering in a basic handheld GPS.
