XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 Graphics Card: Review
Review: XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 Graphics Card

If you want to blast away at the latest games with no worries, then the XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 Graphics Card (HD-487A-ZDFC) could be your next choice for a supreme graphics powerhouse. Loaded with a full 1GB DDR5 memory (the only of its kind), this monster breezes through high-demanding tasks with no problems whatsoever. And what's even better is it supports all the latest technology standards, such as DirectX 10.1 and OpenGL 2.1. If you are a serious gamer in the market for a serious graphics card, this is the one to try.

This PCI Express (x16) graphics card measures 9.5" x 4.376" x 1.5" and requires a 450+ watt power supply (with two 6-pin connectors), meaning that it is a monster always hungry for power. And with a 750Mhz memory clock and a full TERAFLOP of memory speed (3600MHz), this bad-boy is sure to impress in all of your games and video entertainment. As most good things go, it comes at a steep price. But if your budget is set in-between 'median' and 'extreme', then the XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 is a perfect match. It offers value, quality, and performance at levels that rival even some of the most expensive competitors.

Rating:  4.8 out of 5

Value

One surprise I encountered when examining this product was that the price is about $100 less than what it "should" be. The companies in charge of this graphics card, XFX and ATI, went about with developing their marketing strategies very well. While it is still quite expensive, the XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 is comparable to much more expensive graphics cards, perhaps those from just a few years ago. Although it lacks a HDMI port, the features are balanced with strong performance. But, again, this model is only for the serious gamer with a serious budget.

Performance

The XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card is a pure blast from beginning to end. This model is truly the next step in the ever-evolving gaming experience. And with CrossFireX compatibility, you can combine the power of this model to another for double the punch and a balanced workload. The onboard DDR5 memory is the first of its kind on a graphics board, and it goes nicely with the mega core clock. Truly, the manufacturer went all-out with developing a chipset to utilize such power.

Summary

As the graphics card battle rages between NVIDIA and ATI, each company progressively introduces a newer, more powerful graphics card. While competing models usually meet neck-and-neck, the XFX ATI RADEON HD 4870 1GB DDR5 PCI Express Graphics Card is a possible contender against more expensive models. Although it is still quite expensive, this video card is still quite powerful and intended only for the most serious gamers (or those with serious budgets). And with all the latest architecture updates and standard ports (dual-DVI, HDTV/TV outputs, etc.), you really can't go wrong.

Pros

  • First of its kind- features extreme 1GB DDR5 memory for performance
  • Blazing fast- integrated 750MHz core clock and 3600MHz memory speed
  • Standard- dual-DVI and HDTV/TV ports (with connectors), but lacks HDMI
  • Compatible- great for Windows XP but even better for Windows Vista

Cons

  • Expensive- comparing performance to price of higher models makes it better
