Sony KDL-40XBR9: Review
The Sony KDL-40XBR9 LCD HDTV is Sony's latest 40-inch model in its excellent Bravia line of LCD HDTVs. The KDL-40XBR9 features a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, full 1920 x 1080p HD resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate for flicker-free images. The unit is network ready, and features Sony's exclusive Bravia Internet Video, which provides access to a wealth of free and on-demand HD content.

This TV also features access to Bravia Widgets, which allow you to access weather, sports, stock prices and other content from the web. The Bravia KDL-40XBR9 features Live Color Creation Technology with CCFL backlight for more realistic colors, a USB connection for viewing images and video or listening to music and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) compatibility for seamless integration with DLNA-enabled devices.

Features

The Bravia KDL-40XBR9 is packed with features. Sony has done a better job than most at bringing the Internet into your living room, and this unit is packed with features to support this. The Bravia Internet Video feature provides more content than any other manufacturer, and the Bravia Widgets and DLNA-compliance further enhance the Internet features available on this set. Sony has even integrated the TV Guide Interactive Program Guide into the exclusive Bravia Xross Media Bar user interface used by the set.

Performance

Video quality of the KDL-40XBR9 is excellent, with realistic, vibrant colors and flicker-free action scenes. The CCFL backlight provides bright images under most any lighting conditions, and the screen is large enough for a true home theater experience in most any size room. The Internet features perform flawlessly, and are well integrated into the system - it doesn't take a lot of extra effort to access Internet content with this set. Sound quality is passable, but you'll certainly want to couple this set with a surround receiver.

Summary

If you're in the process of building a home-theater system, and are interested in exploring the possibilities of an Internet-connected TV, the Bravia KDL-40XBR9 is an excellent choice. Sony is way ahead of most of the competition in this area, and this set has the features to take advantage of it. And it's available at a reasonable street price for a 40-inch LCD HDTV.
