Mitsubishi WD-73735 Review

Posted to Televisions 2009-09-08

The Mitsubishi WD-73735 is a 73 inch ultra-large screen rear-projection DLP HDTV from Mitsubishi. DLP is a rear-projection technology that uses a chip with millions of tiny mirrors which are used to turn each pixel on or off. Most manufacturers have left this market segment, with Mitsubishi and Samsung being the exceptions. The WD-7375 represents a solid value in an ultra-large screen set, regardless of the technology used.

The WD-7375 features 1920 x 1080p resolution for true HDTV images. The TV has 3 HDMI inputs, 3 component video inputs, one S-video input and two composite video inputs. It also features the NetCommand system, which allows the unit to control other A/V devices using an included 2-unit IR emitter. There's also a USB port for viewing images and videos from your digital camera or camcorder. The included remote control is ergonomically designed and conveniently backlit.

Rating:  out of 5

Value

The WD-73735 represents an excellent value for the street price. The DLP technology allows for a much lower price than non-DLP projection TVs, so the WD-73735 is one of the most reasonably priced ultra large screen units on the market. The set has a handsome appearance that should fit in well with most any décor, and the build quality is quite high. It has most of the connectivity options you're likely to need in a true home theater setup.

Performance

The WD-73735 does a good job of displaying deep black portions of the image, and the brightness level is good enough for watching the set in a lighted room. You'll need to be right in front of the set, however, as brightness drops off sharply as the viewing angle increases. Color accuracy out of the box is not good - you'll want to buy a calibration DVD and set the color controls on the set for more accurate colors. The remote control is excellent, and the NetCommand system is convenient for controlling other devices, although it takes quite a bit of time to set up.

Summary

The WD-73735 makes an excellent choice in an ultra large screen rear projection HDTV set. Samsung has better color accuracy out of the box, but you'll pay quite a bit more. The WD-73735 does an excellent job of displaying HD content with a true theater-like experience. If you're in the process of building a really large screen home theater system, the WD-73735 definitely deserves to be on your short list.
