Sharp BD-HP22U: Review

Released in 2009, the Sharp BD-HP22U is a compact Blu-ray player specially designed to integrate with the Sharp AQUOS LCD TV range. Through the AQUOS link connection, outputs from the BD-HP22U HDMI are recognised and converted into an optimal color setting catered for the AQUOS TV, allowing for the best possible picture quality.

The BD-HP22U provides output in full 1080p/24hz HD quality for crisp playback of video and audio in HD home theater setups. Analogue audio outputs are available for users who don't have a HD capable TV. Along with the inclusion of an Ethernet port for connection to the internet for access to BD Live content, the HP22U uses Profile 2.0 for the most up to date BD Live experience. One USB port is included for access to external storage and the unit comes with a one (1) year limited parts and labor warranty.

Value

As performance for Blu-ray players go, the Sharp BD-HP22U gives what is expected of a player in this range. This should not be taken as a criticism, the cost of Blu-ray layers in general has come down considerably over the past 12 months and there are still true performers out there in the category that are value for money. With a pleasing HDMI 1.3 digital output with x.v color and a sleek design, this player gives performance and value for a home theater; with the added benefit of extra quality should an AQUOS TV be involved in the setup.

Features

Profile 2.0 players are finally making there way into the mainstream Blu-ray market and not before time given the length of time it took for the 1.0 and 1.1 versions to be replaced. Profile 2.0 gives greater access to BD Live content via the internet, enhancing your Blu-ray viewing experience. Sharp's BD-HP22U also provides the aforementioned AQUOS TV customization of color profile, for more quality and accuracy in picture display. Audio output is also well looked after with HD support for both Dobly DTS and Dolby TrueHD.

Summary

Sharp is a reliable manufacturer of home theater components, specifically HD TV's and players. There are no surprises in store for you when purchasing the BD-HP22U, which is a plus if you are just entering the Blu-ray market. The features that are included are terrific value and they will provide a suitable Blu-ray solution for your home cinema. If you already own an AQUOS TV then the value included with this player is even more appealing.
