Sony BDP-CX7000ES Review

Do you have a mass of Blu-ray discs that you just wish you could access easier? You're saved! With the Sony BDP-CX7000ES, you can hold up to 400 discs in what Sony has called 'the megachanger'. Any Blu-ray or DVD library worth its weight should have at least a couple of hundred titles and now the CX7000ES gives you plenty of room for your future purchases too.

This Blu-ray/DVD/CD megachanger, once connected to your home internet connection, can download all the album art and DVD cover sleeve information your heart desires, with connection to the Gracenote download service available free of charge out of the box. Looking to cater for the home theater enthusiast who is after a solution that does just about everything, there is an easy to access 'rental' slot should you feel the need to hire a title that isn't in your 400 strong collection already.

Performance

If the capacity to hold 400 discs is not performance enough, there is the added benefit of a USB port for any digital movies you may have collected, making your CX7000ES your one stop movie and music shop for the home. You can sort and search your discs by title, genre, director plus a few others and the unit is capable of full 1080p HD output via the single HDMI connection at the rear of the unit. The high quality 14 bit video processor that is included also means that your pictures will be displayed in realistic color.

Ergonomics

Navigating through your 400 titles could be troublesome, but through the use of the XROSS media bar technology that was originally seen in other Sony equipment such as the PSP and more recently the Playstation 3, getting your way through all your Genre's should be relatively simple. The unit itself is quite bulky, but that is it to be expected given the 400 disc capacity. If you are going to link this into your home theater amp, you may want to consider a less bulky alternative to fit in with your overall look.

Summary

A let down of the BDP-CX7000ES is its complete lack of Wi-Fi connection, meaning your going to need to have some kind of cable running to your home internet to get the full use of the Gracenote art downloads. If you have the spare money to throw around on a lavish disc changer go for it, but 400 disc capacity is probably overkill. Besides, where are you going to put all those empty cases?
