Toshiba mini NB205-N311/W Frost White: Review

When it comes to battery life in a netbook, the Toshiba mini NB205-N311/W Frost White reins supreme. This ultraportable computer may not be the most powerful on the market, but it boasts some of the best performance and battery life for the price. With a little upgrading, the Toshiba mini competes with models that surpass its price tag. So if you are looking for a lightweight netbook that has extremely long battery life, then consider the Toshiba mini NB205-N311W.

At just 10.4" x 8.3" x 1.3" and 2.9 lbs, this tiny ultraportable is the perfect companion for on the go computing. And although it lacks an optical drive (sold separately) and stereo speakers, it is great for surfing the Internet and performing the small tasks a traveler needs to get done. Thanks to the Windows XP SP3 operating system, this model remains peppy and ready to serve the user. You can't go wrong with a battery life of 9 hours- the most we've seen in almost any of the netbooks on the market today.

Rating:  4.6 out of 5

Performance

In regards to performance, the 10.1" Toshiba mini netbook does surprisingly well. The 1.66GHz Intel Atom processor seems sufficient; however, the 1GB RAM onboard should be upgraded to 2GB to prevent sluggish performance. Battery life is superb, maintaining power for roughly 9 hours and taking relatively little time to recharge. Networking and Internet performance is also excellent, thanks to the 10/100 Ethernet port, integrated 802.11b/g WLAN, and Bluetooth. For your storage needs, the 160GB hard drive gets the job done. Other top bonuses include a speedy all-in-one media card reader, an integrated webcam, and three high-speed USB ports. Performance only seems to be lacking in the speakers and touchpad. Both could use improving.

Ergonomics

The newest trend of "netbooks" are more full-featured than ever before, and the sheer size and weight of this full-featured model is wonderful for the student or frequent traveler. This netbook is a mere 1.3" thick and 2.9 lbs- so compact and lightweight, you will think it's an oversized GPS or other handheld. If you need something small yet savvy, then consider the Toshiba mini.

Summary

Overall, this netbook surprises us with its functionality and capabilities, as well as its jaw-dropping battery life. It is difficult to find another ultraportable this well-designed for the same price or less. The majority of full-featured netbooks cost almost as much as a budget notebook. And although the Toshiba mini NB205-N311W does lack in quality of sound and almost requires the upgrade to 2GB RAM, it is a great value all in all, especially in terms of battery life and the overall experience.

  • Compact- just 1.3" thick and 2.9 lbs
  • Versatile- 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD
  • Upgradeable- add 1GB RAM to boost performance, DVD drive optional
  • Superb- excellent battery life (9 hours) and smooth Windows XP OS
