HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One: Review
HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One: Review

The HP Photosmart C4780 All-in-One printer can print, scan, copy and print photos all in one unit. The C4780 features print speeds of up to 29ppm black and 23ppm color, print resolution of 4800x1200 optimized dpi and a hardware scan resolution of up to 1200 dpi. The C4780 also features a built-in 1.45" color LCD with TouchSmart frame, memory card slots for most popular memory card media, and can print photos without a PC.

The unit also features built-in Wifi wireless network connectivity for shared use and a USB 2.0 interface for personal use. The C4780 uses a 4-color ink system with 2 cartridges - one black cartridge and one tri-color cartridge. The unit can produce up to 30 copies at one time, and copies can be reduced or enlarged using the TouchSmart frame and LCD. Borderless photos up to 8-1/2"x11" inches can be printed.

Rating:  4.4 out of 5

Features

The Photosmart C4780 has most of the features you're likely to need in a shared or personal all-in-one printer. The built-in LCD is on the small size, with a lot of real estate taken up by the TouchSmart frame. Print speeds are acceptable, but certainly not best in class. Epson's similarly priced printers print 30% faster and can print in color as fast as in black and white. The Wifi connection makes for easy setup and sharing, but a wired Ethernet would have been nice, too.

Performance

The C4780 produces excellent quality photos and documents at reasonable print speeds. The ability to print photos and make copies without a PC is a big plus. The built-in LCD and touchscreen simplifies control of the printer with easy to use on-screen menus. The memory card slots are nice but do not support all available formats - again similarly priced models from Epson do. The built-in Wifi is ready to go with just one button press, and performs flawlessly.

Summary

If you're in the market for a new shared or personal printer, the C4780 makes a good choice. It's probably not up to the rigors of small or home office use, but should make a good all-in-one for shared family or personal use. The photo quality is excellent and document text is crisp and clear. The scanner has enough resolution to make good copies of photos as well. All in all a good offering from HP.
