Sony A380 DSLR: Review
Sony A380 DSLR review:

The Sony A380 DSLR is a new 14.2MP digital SLR with an 18-55mm zoom lens from Pentax. The camera features a tiltable 2.7" color LCD display, SteadyShot INSIDE in-camera image stabilization and eye-start autofocus. Other features include super-quick autofocus, Sony BRAVIA sync compatibility through an HDMI interface and a built-in pop-up flash and accessory shoe.

The camera features up to 2.5 fps continuous shooting when using the optical viewfinder, 6 scene selection modes, 8 Creative Style settings and an advanced anti-dust technology to keep the sensor free from dust. The Sony A380 can take up to 500 shots on a single battery charge and uses Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo or SD/SDHC cards for image storage. The camera also features RAW storage mode, measures 5.0" x 3.8" x 2.8" and weighs 17.2 ounce without the battery.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Value

The Sony A380 DSLR sits on the upper end of the entry-level DSLR class, and is priced very reasonably when you consider the specs. The 14.2 megapixel sensor, coupled with the excellent included kit lens, make this camera a good value at its current street price. It has most of the same features as the competition in this class, but is priced a little lower. The eye-start autofocus is a Sony exclusive in this class and the in-camera image stabilization can help save you money on accessory lenses.

Performance

The Sony Alpha 380 delivers excellent performance for an entry-level DSLR. Image quality is excellent throughout the zoom range, and the high-resolution allows for a lot of creativity when cropping and editing photos. Large prints are not a problem, given the resolution and optical quality of the included lens. Autofocus is fast, smooth and positive, and the optical viewfinder is an excellent one, although a little on the small size. The in-camera image stabilization works well, as does the dust prevention technology.

Summary

If you're in the market for an entry-level DSLR that's a cut above the average, the Sony Alpha 380 makes an excellent choice. The high resolution sensor, excellent optics of the included kit lens, and in-camera image stabilization add up to a good value when compared to the competition. All in all a very good offering from Sony.

Pros

  • 14.2 megapixel resolution
  • 18-55mm kit lens
  • In-camera image stabilization
  • 2.5 fps continuous shooting

Cons

  • Optical viewfinder a bit cramped
