The LaCie Rugged XL 301848U is a 1 Terabyte (TB) external hard drive for your PC or Macintosh that gives added confidence that your data will be safe through the use of its protective outer coating. The shock resistance bumper that the actual drive is encased means that any accidental knocks along the way will not affect the physical components of the drive. External hard drives are becoming more compact as technology advances, so it is encouraging to see the addition of larger drives such as this 1TB unit from Lacie. The drive weighs approximately 37.8ounces, though its lightweight and compact nature are not enough to detract from the loud orange sleeve that provides the shock resistant capability. There are some LED's on the unit to notify you of operation and it comes with a 2 year limited warranty should you have any troubles along the way.
PerformanceData transfer rates are a real plus of the Rugged XL unit. Supported by a USB 2.0 interface to your computer, this will give you the ability to transfer your information up to 30 MB/s. The bonus interface that this LaCie Rugged XL drive gives you is an eSATA port. This port will allow you to transfer your data up to 80 MB/s that is more than double your USB 2.0 speed. So if you have video, photos or very large data files this would be the option to choose however there are very few computers that support this port out of the box. ErgonomicsDepending on your design persuasions, you will either adore the orange exterior or think that it would look better tucked away under some books on your computer desk. The drive is rather small at a width of 5.1inches, depth of 8.5inches and height of 1.7 so it is not going to take up too much room on your desk or in your bag when transporting. Unfortunately, until the square like design to the physical drive within changes, there is not a lot that can be done with external drives, but if you look past the orange exterior the Rugged XL is more compact than some competitors drives.
