Canon has introduced a new pro-quality 4X telephoto zoom range lens with a focal length of 100-400mm and a maximum aperture of f4.5-5.6. The Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM features two IS (Image Stabilization) modes, allowing steady far-off shots as well as clear close-up portraits with a blurred background. The use of Fluorite and Super UD-glass elements largely eliminates effects from secondary spectrum. The lens is 3.6 inches in diameter and 7.4 inches long, weighs 3.1 pounds and comes with a 1-year warranty. It is compatible with Canon's 1.4 X II and 2X II extenders, and has a close focusing distance of 5.9 feet. The lens is constructed using 17 elements in 14 groups and has a diagonal angle of view of 24 to 6 degrees. The lens uses a rear-focusing system with USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) and takes 77mm diameter filters.
QualityThis Canon L-series lens is true pro-quality. Construction is of high quality metal and plastic throughout, and the Super UD-glass used for the lens elements ensures sharp photos with little aberration. A nice feature is the tripod mount, which you'll need, given the size and weight of this lens. If you're an advanced amateur or pro photographer, you can justify the expense of this lens because of the beating it can take. PerformanceThe EF 100-400mm is a solid performer, delivering excellent results at all focal lengths. There is little distortion at either end of the zoom range, and chromatic aberrations are kept to a minimum by the super UD-glass. The lens handles well, and focusing is smooth and quiet with the USM. The zoom motion is smooth as well. The two IS modes add a lot of versatility for distance photos or for portrait work. SummaryIf you're in the market for a telephoto zoom with a pro-quality Canon L-Series lens for your EOS digital SLR, the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM makes an excellent choice. It's built to pro standards and delivers the performance to match. It's a bit on the pricey side, but all pro-quality glass is expensive, so it's not out of line with the competition. Sigma would be the only option for beating the price, and their quality is not up to Canon's level. All in all a very good offering from Canon. Pros
