Denon DHT-FS3: Review

Denon DHT-FS3: Review
As virtual surround sound systems become steadily popular, devices such as the Denon DHT-FS3 HTIB (home theater in a box) are a big hit with consumers. Although this model primarily targets high-budget customers, a recent influx of virtual surround sound systems on the market has caused prices to drop. Needless to say, this pricey Denon produces great sound and features useful plugs, without sacrificing space and style. With a surprisingly-wide range of surround sound, it will turn your ordinary multimedia experience into an extraordinary one.

Even though the Denon DHT-FS3 is competing against tougher, similarly-priced models, it is relatively more compact. It measures 33.5 x 3.8 x 4.9 inches and weighs 3.5 pounds. Despite the smaller size, it provides nearly equal audio quality and performance. Unfortunately, this model lacks HDMI and video switching, which a surprise is considering the high price. If those features are absolutely must-haves for you, then you may want to consider a different virtual surround sound system. Needless to say, the Denon DHT-FS3 is a great addition to your home theater.

Rating:  3.4 out of 5

Value

The biggest "con" of this product is its price. Denon does not fail to deliver quality with this sleek home-theater-in-a-box, but considering that other similarly-priced systems feature HDMI and video ports, we find this model a little disappointing. As far as value versus price, the value is probably less than the price suggests. Regardless of the price tag, the Denon DHT-FS3 is an excellent system for tight spaces, and it should still be considered by high-budget users.

Features

Thanks to the X-Space Surround technology and built-in DTS and Dolby Digital, this compact home theater system is great for the bedroom, where space is limited. This model comes with a subwoofer for better sound and wall-brackets for saving space. It also has rubber feet attachments to place the system in front of the TV. This configuration may block your remote receptor, however. The Denon DHT-FS3 is easy to setup and easy to use, and it features two stereo analog, one coaxial, and two optical audio ports. It lacks HDMI and video switching ports, which is a surprise considering the price, but it does support iPod-dock connectivity (optional dock sold separately). Overall, the features are average but still very useful.

Summary

If you don't want to mess with the hassle of half a dozen speakers, then the Denon DHT-FS3 HTIB is definitely for you. Of course, it is virtually impossible to create the stunning quality that five or eight different speakers provide, but this Denon definitely comes close with just one sound bar and a subwoofer. If you are limited on space and just want something simple and easy to setup, then you should consider this virtual surround sound system. The price tag is unusually high for the quality and features offered by the product, but if you manage to get it on sale, then you really have a bargain.

Pros

  • Superb virtual surround sound quality
  • Features two analog, one coaxial, and two optical audio ports
  • Sleek, stylish, and perfect audio system substitute

Cons

  • Expensive- shop around before buying
  • Lacks HDMI- lack of video switching is a disappointment
