Onkyo TX-SR707: Review
To go along with the HDMI 1080p upscaling by Faroujda DCDi Cinema, the Onkyo TX-SR707
is a THX Select2 Plus certified AVR Receiver. This certification gives confidence that the unit is engineered to give optimal performance when used in a room that has a viewing distance of between 10 to 12 feet from the main display to the primary seating position.

The TX-SR707 is able to give High definition audio output via its 7.2 channel surround sound capability and accepts all standard high def audio inputs such as DTS-HD, Dolby Digital and TrueHD. Video input is also accepted in all formats up to 1080p HD, so video playback will be available in its highest quality, adding to the viewing experience. New features of the TX-SR707 include the ability to handle Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz surround sound formats, showing that it won't be quickly outdated by further technological advancements.

Rating:  4.0 out of 5

Features

The inclusion of Ethernet capability gives the unit connectivity needed on a home network, though there is no Wireless capability included. Auto speaker calibration is another handy addition that takes the guesswork out of configuring your theater for optimal sound output. The unit can also perform Analog to HD upscaling conversion which should give a noticeable increase in visual and audio quality from your older analog sources. Loudness correction via the Audyssey Dynamic EQ and the added features of the Audyssey Dynamic volume system give consistently good sound output.

Ergonomics

Button configurations on the physical unit are easy to understand, though the units look will not dazzle the eye. Onkyo have included an on screen remote configuration menu, taking the guesswork out of the wealth of standard config options that many AV receivers have. The remote also comes with an LED backlight so that you can easily make adjustments in any lighting situation.

Summary

The easy to use menus and auto speaker calibration of the TX-SR707 do give it a leg up in standing amongst other AV receivers. It is relatively well designed in terms of usability, though visually it won't stand out too much. With the added benefit of new surround sound features that the Audyssey codecs provide, this receiver is well built to cope with any further advancements in technology that may come about.
