Canon PIXMA MP250 Photo All-In-One : Review

Pictures with the Canon PIXMA MP250 Photo All-In-One unit don't dazzle the eye, but as an entry level option for the home solution to print, copy and scan, it will suffice. If you are just starting out with a home photo printer the PIXMA MP250 gives you the benefit of the Auto Photo Fix II features in the included Easy PhotoPrint EX software for simple touchups and corrections to your existing photos.

Supported paper types for borderless photo printing include Photo Paper Pro Platinum, Photo Paper Pro II and Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. Print resolutions vary depending on the output, with 600 x 600 dpi available in black and 4800 x 1200 dpi in color. The copy speed is suitable for a home user running at around 39 seconds in full color and can handle up to 99 pages at a time. To further cater for a first time user, Canon includes toll free technical support and a 90 day limited Instant Exchange warranty.

Rating:  2.8 out of 5

Features

The maximum DPI resolution of the scanner is 600 x 1200 DPI, which is a little on the low end of current scanning capability. PICT Bridge is available providing you already have a cable which will allow you to print directly from your external camera. Unfortunately the MP250 lacks separate Ink cartridges, simply having a black and a color tank. This causes some trouble when you may only run out of one specific color after doing a number of prints, meaning replacement of the whole cartridge each time could be costly. Standard USB 2.0 connection is used to hook up the unit to your PC or MAC.

Ergonomics

The MP250 is only available in the standard grey/black finish and there is no LCD readout on the unit. As part of Canon's generation green product initiative the MP250 has a number of additional benefits that could help tilt the scales in its favor. Firstly, its energy star compliance and its 4in1 and 2in1 print options mean the unit is much kinder on the environment as a whole. Additionally, the MP250 is also RoHS compliant, the European standard for confirmation that the product is free of any harmful materials that could damage the environment after the unit has been thrown away.

Summary

With the wealth of entry level printer options available, the Canon PIXMA MP250 isn't able to rise above them all, but it does give you the basic functions you need. If you are cautious about making sure your printer looks after the environment and are willing to spend a little more replacing the whole color cartridge each time, the MP250 is fairly good value.

  • 4800 x 1200 DPI
