Yes the Canon SELPHY CP790 Compact Photo Printer from Canon is as compact as most photo inkjet printers come at the moment, but on first (and most subsequent) looks you are left wondering, why? The units green bucket style case is certainly unique, though not eye pleasing in any way whatsoever begging you to ask the question of exactly where Canon expected you to store it. Functionally speaking, the use of the storage bucket idea is quite unique and one that has not been seen before. The bucket can hold your paper and ink requirements for printing on the fly which should mean that you are never found without them. There is a serious need for this unit to be made available in additional colors to tone down the eyesore that it may create on your desk, but if you have a definite need for a portable printer then there are some pieces of this unit to like.
PerformanceFor a portable printer the text and photos that are produced are an acceptable quality ranging up to 300 x 300 dpi in color. The unit supports print size photos up to 4x6 size and completes the print of a color photo in approximately 47 seconds. Key to the units performance has to be the bang it delivers for its size and given the unit only measures 7'(w) x 9.7'(h) x 3.4'(d) the photo quality is more then expected. Added mobile performance benefits include the ability to print from a memory card. ErgonomicsThough the bucket storage case is clearly functional for a portable printer such as this, especially given the added carry handle, its color and general shape leave more than a bit to be desired. The buttons located on the top of the printer, along with the 3.0 LCD screen, give a very user-friendly feel to the unit. Added benefit of the LCD screen is the ability for it to produce a sample of the image that is about to be printed, a very handy addition to a portable printer. Unfortunately, the color and general shape of the unit do detract from the other useable functions. SummaryOverall a very bold move on Canon to provide the consumer market with a unique design and color for a portable printer. The Canon Selphy CP790 will perform good color prints at a print resolution up to 300 x 300 dpi. Given its very unattractive color and design shape there is always the green bucket with handle to hide it in when on the move.
