Canon PIXMA iP4700 Photo Printer: Review
Canon PIXMA iP4700 Photo Printer : Review

With the addition of auto duplex printing, the Canon PIXMA iP4700 Photo Printer becomes a very handy photo printer for home usage. Auto duplex allows you to print double sided onto your paper, saving you money, whilst also giving the added benefit of having a more environmentally friendly printer as this model is part of the Canon 'Generation Green' technology initiative.

The unit comes with a 1 year limited warranty and is backed by the toll free support line that Canon has established to help first time buyers. Individual Ink tanks help contribute to the generation green label that the iP4700 carries, with 5 separate tanks meaning you'll hopefully save some money on only having to replace the colors that run out. Printing is supported up to 9600 x 2400 dpi in color, with the standard 600 x 600 dpi available for black and white printing.

Rating:  3.6 out of 5

Features

Multiple mediums are able to printed on by the iP4700, with a vast range of Glossy photo paper being supported as well as T-Shirt Transfers, Glossy stickers and CD/DVD label printing. The included Label print software is an added benefit to those who have never dealt with label printing before and is easily installed. PictBridge is available in this unit which gives the user the added freedom of printing to the machine without a computer connection actually being required. The auto paper feeder can hold up to 150 sheets of paper in addition to the paper cassette that can hold 150 sheets, giving you adequate enough paper throughput to support any document you might need to print.

Performance

Printing speed of the iP4700 is not lightning fast when compared with a dedicated machine that you would use in a commercial environment, but it is capable of 9.2pages per minute in black and 8.1 in color. A full borderless color photo in a standard 4 inch x 6 inch size will be completed in around 20 seconds, which is more than adequate in most home environments. Power consumption whilst in full operation with this unit is around 17watts, which is above average, though the minimal 0.9 watts in standby helps to make up for that.

Summary

Though the Canon PIXMA iP4700 does have some additional advantages over its predecessors, there is not a lot in terms of performance of this unit that would warrant an upgrade. If you are looking for a new inkjet photo printer that has some good environmental benefits, easy connectivity and a handy DPI for photos then this model should meet those requirements.
