Canon PIXMA iP100 Photo Printer: Review

The Canon PIXMA iP100 Photo Printer is a mobile photo inkjet printer that is capable of a printing resolution up to 9600 x 2400 dpi in color. Printing speed is a key factor when looking for a mobile printer that must be able to produce when needed and with print speeds up to 20page per minute (PPM) in black and 14ppm in color, the iP100 won't let you down in this area.

Canon's patented FINE technology is used in the iP100 Inkjet nozzle which makes the printer capable of producing ink drops as small as 1 picoliter, getting more high quality ink onto the page and in turn increasing the look of your prints. Auto Image fixing capability is included with the printer to help automatically correct your photos by brightening colors and make your portraits appear more real overall. The printer measures 12.7inch wide, 2.4inches high and 7.2inches deep making it a suitable size to be moved around consistently

Rating:  4.2 out of 5

Performance

The printing performance of the iP100 is outstanding given it is a dedicated mobile photo printer, with 600 x 600 dpi in black and 9600 x 2400 dpi in color. It is compatible with Mac OSX and Windows meaning you can get this exceptional printing quality on either operating system. A full postcard size 4x6 borderless photo can be completed in around 50 seconds. Through the included Easy-PhotoPrint EX software touchups to skin tone and faces can be made easily and quickly, ensuring that all your photos are of the highest quality.

Ergonomics

Whilst size is an important factor in the choice of a portable printer, weight should also be a key factor in your choice. The iP100 only weighs 4.4lbs, which will allow you to move it around easily wherever you are located at the time. This unit is part of Canons Instant exchange, 1 year limited warranty program allowing consumers to replace their faulty unit quickly and easily. The 9.9watt of power usage during operation and 1.5watts in standby means that battery life is extended, allowing for approximately 290sheets before connection to a power outlet is needed.

Summary

Printing resolution and speeds are well above what is offered in other mobile printers available on the market and the impressive battery life of 290 sheets means the iP100 should always be ready to print your photos. There are 2 separate ink tanks, one for color and one black as well as added mobile printing capability via PictBridge and optional Bluetooth.

Pros

  • Small power usage
  • Auto image fix
  • 2 separate ink tanks
  • Great size for portable printer
  • 290 sheet battery life
