LaCie LaCinema Rugged 301461KUA: Review
LaCie LaCinema Rugged 301461KUA: Review

The LaCie LaCinema Rugged 301461KUA adds something extra to the small, portable drive range with the inclusion of the extra cinema playback functionality. The drive can connect up to a TV or compatible HDMI device to push out videos in HD formats, or for those without HD connections, analog connection with A/V cables is also supported.

What separates the LaCinema Rugged 500GB from the rest of the LaCinema range is the inclusion of the rugged exterior that has been designed by Neil Poulton. The protective exterior gives your data the added protection that comes with the scratch resistant and shock resistant features that the Rugged exterior gives. This LaCinema version has also had a change in color of the outer protection layer, with black now being the color of choice, making way for it to be less offensive in your home cinema setup then the default orange that has become the norm in the Rugged range to date.

Rating:  3.2 out of 5

Value

If you are in need of a small hard drive for your home cinema that will also need to be able to withstand the rigors of constantly being moved around, than this is probably the drive for you. Its value beyond that is minimal, with a small storage capacity, lack of sound codec's for Apple AAC and no HD up scaling meaning that you could find much better offerings in the media center market or in other LaCinema products.

Features

The usefulness of this drive really depends on exactly how much you are planning on storing on it, with only 500GB of storage data available, you may quickly outgrow it and have need to move up into the higher end of the market. Furthermore, ensure that your iTunes music files are stored in Windows AAC format because the Apple AAC format (.m4a) is not supported as a sound codec in this drive. USB 2.0 connection allows easy file transfer from your PC or MAC and there is also a remote control for easy navigation of the on screen menus.

Summary

If you don't own a number of movies or music you'd like to port to your external drive, than the LaCinema Rugged 500GB provided by this drive will likely be all you will need. The remote control is also handy, giving your drive the media center feel, but if you want that it might be worth getting a media center with a higher capacity to help look after your expanding files in the future.

  • No HD up scaling
  • Better value elsewhere
  • HD Support
  • Remote Control
