Logitech Harmony One Advanced: Review

Logitech Harmony One Advanced: Review
Consumers who want to use the power of a single remote to control all of their devices should consider the Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote, which is the middle model in the Harmony series of remotes. This clever device is much more expensive than a traditional remote, but the functionality and flexibility it provides makes it well worth the cost. If you are ready to ditch your remote collection and upgrade to new technology, consider this product.

Unlike the Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced, which is the highest model in the series, this model is form-fitting and traditionally "remote" shaped. The Harmony One Advanced is perfect for those who are not certain if the lower-end models would suffice, or for those who have budgets that restrict them from buying higher models. And because it combines a color touch screen with traditional controls, you won't have a problem managing your favorite devices. The Harmony One Advanced is not the best universal remote you can buy, but it is quite suitable for most users.

Rating:  4.2 out of 5

Value

This remote is roughly twice the price of the Logitech Harmony 510, but it controls three times as many devices. If you have a more expansive budget then you will want to consider the higher-tier models, which provide slightly more functionality than the Harmony One. This device has an easy to use cradle charger, as well as an optimized setup process to prevent difficulties that many users will come across. Unfortunately, this remote does not include RF compatibility, so if you have devices that are hidden from sight, you will want to upgrade to one of the top two models. Nevertheless, when comparing price to features and capabilities, the Harmony One is a winner.

Performance

For the majority of users, this universal remote is a blast. It is extensive enough to control several devices, yet compact enough to not look out of place as far as remote ergonomics go. Unfortunately, for many consumers, the remote's performance is less impressive and sometimes disappointing. Menus navigate sluggishly, and some people continue to have control errors even after configuring the firmware. Then again, many of the problems simply stem from inexperience with this kind of remote, so remember to keep that in mind before making a decision.

Summary

If you want more than what the lower-end Harmony remotes offer, but don't want to spend the money that the Harmony 1100 Advanced or a similar model demands, then consider the Logitech Harmony One. It offers a nice balance of controllability, functionality, and compatibility at a price that is expensive but still worth the price. Although there have been reported problems with the firmware (perhaps a defect, but newer firmware is available), the majority of Harmony One owners are very pleased with this device.

Pros

  • Advanced- combines a balance functionality with affordability
  • Compatible- supports thousands of brands and devices
  • Flexible- controls up to 15 devices with one remote

Cons

  • No RF- does not support RF devices
  • Flaws- firmware issues and sluggish performance
