Canon PowerShot SD940 IS: Review
Canon PowerShot SD940 IS review:

The Canon PowerShot SD940 IS is a compact 12.1 megapixel, 4X optical zoom digital camera. This Canon camera features a true 28mm wide angle, Canon's optical image stabilization and 720p HD movie shooting capability. Other features of the PowerShot SD940IS include an HDMI interface for viewing photos or movies on an HDTV, a large 2.7 inch LCD display with wide viewing angle and an improved smart auto mode.

The camera features a 35mm equivalent focal length of 28-112mm, a normal minimum focus distance of 1.0 ft. and a macro minimum focus distance of 1.2 inches. The 2.7 inch color LCD features 230,000 dots of resolution, the camera has a maximum aperture range of f/2.8 to f/5.9 and a shutter speed range of 15-1/1500 seconds. Other features include an ISO range of 80-1600, +/- 2 stops of exposure compensation and a built-in flash with red-eye reduction. The flash has a range of 1-13 ft. and a recycle time of 10 seconds or less.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Features

The PowerShot SD940IS is strong on features. In addition to those already mentioned, the camera features 7 white balance settings including Custom, 18 scene modes and 12 photo effects which can be applied to your photos automatically. The zoom range is truly useful and the unit is compact enough to fit easily in a pocket or purse. The user interface is quite intuitive and the camera does offer some manual control of settings. The HD movie mode is a real plus and the 2.7 inch LCD display is quite large for such a compact camera.

Performance

The PowerShot SD940IS delivers good performance for the price. The full auto mode produces excellent results, and the host of scene modes and white balance settings allow for excellent image quality under all types of lighting. The ISO range is good for bright sunlight or night shots, and the zoom range and macro capability open up a lot of picture taking opportunities. About the only downside is poor noise reduction in low-light settings, which is something that goes along with the small sensor needed to produce such a compact camera.

Summary

If you're in the market for a high-resolution compact point-and-shoot camera, the Canon PowerShot SD940 IS is a good value for the street price. Some of the competition may be priced lower, but doesn't include all of the features offered by the SD940 IS. The image quality is excellent overall for a camera this size, and the HD movie mode makes for a very versatile digital camera.

  • 12.1 megapixel resolution
