Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1: Review
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 review:

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is a new 10 megapixel, 5 times optical zoom point-and-shoot digital camera from Sony. It features Sony's new EXMOR CMOS sensor technology, which provides excellent low-light performance. Other features include a 24-120mm focal length range, a 2.7 inch color LCD and a very compact design. The camera has a continuous shooting speed of 10fps at full resolution, can capture HD (720p) movies at 30fps and the lens features optical image stabilization.

The Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 also features a sweep panorama mode, ISOs up to 3200 and an intelligent scene recognition mode. The camera has an intelligent auto focus system that can lock focus in as little as 0.3 seconds, face and motion detection technology and dynamic range optimization, which helps to recover highlights and shadows in subjects with extreme contrast. The camera uses a rechargeable lithium ion battery and has a component video output for viewing images and movies on your HDTV.

Rating:  4.2 out of 5

Value

The Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is a bit pricey for a 10 megapixel point-and-shoot, but its performance specs make it worth every penny. It uses the same quality lens technology as Sony's digital SLR lenses, and the new EXMOR sensor makes it one of the fastest point-and-shoots on the market. The lens has a maximum aperture of f/2.4 at 24mm. And the 24mm wide angle is best in class. The 10fps continuous shooting is also best in class. In addition, the EXMOR sensor means higher quality HD movies at 30fps.

Features

Sony didn't scrimp on features when they designed the Cyber-shot DSC-WX1. It includes the same or better feature set than most of the competition, but offers much better performance. There's a host of scene modes and many settings allow manual control. Thanks to the intelligent scene recognition, the fast intelligent auto focus and advanced metering, the camera takes excellent quality images on full auto. The Sweep Panorama model is unique to Sony and there's an Easy Shooting Mode, which allows even beginners to digital photography to take excellent photos.

Summary

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1 is not your average point-and-shoot camera. The new EXMOR sensor technology overcomes many of the shortcomings of compact cameras with small sensors. Its performance specs are truly impressive, and the build quality is above average. The lens is also higher quality than the norm, and this is evident in image quality. If it's within your budget, the Cyber-shot WX1 definitely deserves a look.
