KEF iQ70: Review

The KEF iQ70 speakers are the top model in the new Q Series of speakers. Included technology rivals that of the higher end IQ90 speaker, while providing it in a slimmer enclosure for a more pleasing look. The speakers are designed as a two and half-way bass reflex to give superior bass performance across the different sound ranges.

Fitting a set of KEF speakers in to your home has also become easier as the IQ70 are available in five finishes available. Of course there is a standard Black Ash and other finishes include Dark Apple, American Walnut, Walnut real wood veneer and Light Oak real wood veneer. The enclosure is engineered in a curved shape to give minimized impact from sound distortion. Kef's patented Uni-Q driver configuration is included in the Q series to give clearer sound.

Quality

Materials used in the Kef IQ70 cabinet construction are a laminated MDF with an internal bracing. This helps to give the loudspeaker more acoustic capabilities while reducing any discoloration that might occur over time. The floor standing units come with an internal damping system to help reduce vertical standing wave interface. The use of the aluminum dome tweeter further shows the commitment by KEF to include quality materials in their products.

Performance

With the aluminum 0.75 inch elliptical dome tweeter, improvements in acoustics can be noticed and provides a more realistic vocal sound. Quality parts also means that improvements in high frequency response can be noticed, as-well-as an overall smoother and cleared sound. Crossover frequencies operate at 2.5 kHz and the maximum output of the unit is 111dB. Amplifier requirements vary from 15-150W, while the overall frequency range is between 36hz - 40khz. KEF's patented Uni-Q configuration, when combined with the new LF drivers that feature in the Q series, help make a perfect speaker for all around performance.

Summary

KEF has borrowed plenty of the good stuff from speakers in their other ranges and included them within their Q Series. This provides a better overall experience when listening to them, while keeping the costs down. For the performance that is capable from the IQ70 series, they deserve consideration for any new home cinema setup.
