Sony VAIO NW Series VGN-NW250F/B Black: Review

If you are looking for a nicely-equipped, well-balanced notebook that will not hamper your budget, then consider the Sony VAIO NW Series VGN-NW250F/B BlackNotebook PC. Although this model is clearly not for the power-hungry PC gamer, it is certainly appropriate for the home consumer. Featuring a brilliant 15.5-inch display, 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor, and Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) operating system, this Sony notebook boasts great balance of features and performance versus cost.

Measuring 14.6 x 9.8 x 1.2 inches and weighing 6 pounds, the Sony VAIO VGN-NW250F/B is not an ultraportable, but it is not necessarily a desktop replacement either. This model falls somewhere in the middle range concerning size and weight. If you are concerned with portability and plan to travel often, you may want to consider a different notebook. More importantly, however, this Sony VAIO overwhelmingly impresses with its quality in value, capabilities, and features. If you want the best VAIO notebook for a mid-range budget, then this model may be the right one for you.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Value

Although you may be able to find a notebook with nearly all the same features for $100 less, this Sony VAIO is one of the best values for a PC by this manufacturer. VAIO is a long-time trusted and tested notebook series, and the VAIO VGN-NW250F/B continues that legacy of high-value. What makes this model so unique are enhancements like the Web button feature, which allows you to quickly access the internet without even starting Windows. The 4 hour battery life is not as impressive as that of other laptops, but it is longer than that of several comparable notebooks. If you want the most for your money in a Sony PC, then definitely consider this one.

Features

As far as features go, the Sony VAIO VGN-NW250F/B is reasonably-equipped. This model features a 320GB hard drive, Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB RAM, integrated graphics, high-definition audio, wireless a/b/g/n WLAN, 8x DVD/CD drive, gigabit Ethernet, and entertainment goodies like HDMI and MOTION-EYE webcam. Concerning ports, this model is equipped with three USB 2.0, one FireWire, one HDMI, one VGA, one ExpressCard /34 slot, one Memory Stick/Memory Stick DUO slot, one Secure Digital memory card slot, and one 10/100/1000 gigabit Ethernet port. Overall, the features are impressive, but this notebook lacks Bluetooth functionality.

Summary

If you are in the market for a sleek Sony that boasts useful features like HDMI and Draft-N wireless, then consider the Sony VAIO NW Series VGN-NW250F/B. Although it lacks Bluetooth, this is one of the best-valued VAIO notebooks for the price. Consumers who plan to travel frequently may want to consider a different model, but if you are the average home or small office user, then you will find this notebook well-suited for your tasks. This PC also falls short on graphics, so if you are a heavy gamer then you should look elsewhere.

Pros

  • Mid-range notebook- both in size and budget
  • Features HDMI and Draft-N Wireless for ultimate functionality
  • Keyboard 'Web' button allows access without booting PC
  • Excellent value for a high-quality Sony VAIO

Cons

  • Lacks Bluetooth and sufficient graphics for games
