Sony VAIO X Series VPCX111KX/B : Review
Sony VAIO X Series VPCX111KX/B: Review

Consumers desiring ultimate portability and superb battery performance should consider the SSony VAIO X Series VPCX111KX/B, which is the world's lightest notebook and one of the most energy-efficient models we have ever seen. Although this notebook will certainly put a dent in your wallet, its 1.6 pound weight and battery life of up to 14 hour are hard to beat in a laptop. If you plan to be on-the-go quite often, and you don't want to lug around a bulky laptop, then this VAIO X Series notebook is definitely one to consider.

This model measures 10.95" x 0.55" x 7.29" and weighs an incredibly-light 1.60 lbs. If you are a high-budget traveler who needs ultimate portability and impressive functionality, then this notebook should be at the top of your list. With the optional large capacity battery, you can achieve over 14 hours of notebook operating time. This model features integrated GPS, Bluetooth, Verizon Wireless Mobile Broadband (paid service required), and more. And because it is packed into a thin, lightweight chassis, you don't have to worry about the difficulties that come along with a larger laptop.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Features

The Sony VAIO X Series VPCX111KX/B is clearly a traveler's companion, namely because the hard drive is small (64GB SSD) and the onboard graphics are hardly worth mentioning. This model features a 2.0 GHz Intel Atom Processor, 2GB RAM, mobile Intel GMA plus audio, wireless b/g/n, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth, built-in GPS, Verizon Wireless Broadband, and more. The wireless capabilities are certainly favorites with consumers, especially those who are always on the go. If you are looking for a computer with more power-packed graphics or a DVD/CD burner, then you should look elsewhere. This model comes with two USB ports and that's about it-connectivity features are abundant, but functionality in regards to entertainment is very limited.

Ergonomics

According to Sony, this is the world's lightest notebook in the 10" and above category. This is also one of the slimmest notebooks available, which makes it perfect for the consumer who has limited storage or travel space. Although the price may be out of reach for many people, the number of traveler-friendly features that are crammed into this model is amazing. Sony clearly made it their goal to manufacture a slim and lightweight yet powerful and user-friendly notebook.

Summary

You can find better-featured notebooks for half the price of this model, but it is very difficult to find an extremely thin and lightweight laptop that doesn't back down from functionality. Naturally, as with most of the Sony VAIO notebooks, the VPCX111KX/B is expensive and targeted exclusively for high-budget Sony fans. But if you don't mind the high price and lackluster performance, and you travel frequently, then this notebook offers at least four stars for your consideration.

Pros

  • World's lightest notebook that offers long battery life
  • Intel Atom processor with 2GB RAM, 65GB HDD, and integrated graphics
  • Includes built-in GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi b/g/n, Verizon Wireless, Ethernet
  • Wireless features impress, but missing features degrades satisfaction

Cons

  • Very expensive- perhaps too expensive for many
