Apple MacBook Pro MC373LL/A: Review

Third in the 15.4-inch Apple MacBook Pro lineup is the Apple MacBook Pro MC373LL/A model, which is basically the same as the other 15-inch models with exception to the processor and discrete video memory. This version features a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 processor with 4GB RAM and a next-generation NVIDIA 330M graphics card and 512MB video memory. Like similar models, there is also a price difference of several hundred dollars for the upgrades. If you are ready to take your computing to another level, then consider the Apple MacBook Pro MC373LL/A notebook.

Measuring approximately 14.35" x 9.82" x 0.95" and weighing 5.6 pounds, this model is virtually identical to other new MacBook Pros. The only notable differences are underneath the hood of this powerful Mac machine. Users will be pleased to discover that the average battery life (8 to 9 hours) in this model is comparable to that of models with a lower processor. Another bonus is the fact that the hard drive is bigger, and the video card comes loaded with more memory.

Rating:  4.6 out of 5

Features

As mentioned in other reviews, each model in the MacBook Pro series offers advantages over the notebooks below them. As one of the top in the tier of the lineup, the MC373LL/A edition features a 500GB hard drive, 8x DVD/CD SuperDrive, integrated iSight camera, gigabit LAN (10/100/100), Bluetooth, AirPort Extreme 802.11n wireless, two USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 800 port, a SD card slot, and one Mini DisplayPort video output. This model comes pre-installed with Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and iLife '09, but we highly recommend users to update the Mac OS to v10.6.4 in order to avoid several technical issues that have recently come about.

Ergonomics

Although complaints about this MacBook Pro seem to come few and far between, several people have pointed out that the aluminum unibody has disadvantages, such as a sharp edge that may leave indentions on your wrists if you are typing on the keyboard for extending periods of time. Other than that, consumers have absolutely raved about this product, and it certainly is a good laptop for novice and experienced Mac users alike. The number one compliment is that the MacBook Pro is faster and less "buggy" than most of its PC competition.

Summary

Apple has marketed the next-generation MacBook Pro series as generally customizable to the consumer, and such is true with the various models that they offer with different features and price ranges. If the MC373LL/A is within your budget and you are ready to upgrade to the latest Intel Core i7 dual-core processing, then by all means consider this model. Not only does it have a larger hard drive, but it also features more NVIDIA graphics video memory. By all means this is not the perfect laptop, but as far as Macs go, it is just as close to being such.
