Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM: Review
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM review:

If your Canon SLR camera lens needs an upgrade or replacement, then by all means consider the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens. This new lens does what many people thought would never happen- replace the L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something more powerful and versatile. This extended range, ultra-wide angle camera lens is ideal for digital and film shooters, featuring a sealed glass element and new AF processor.

With a max diameter of 3.3" x 4.9" and weight of 2.2 pounds, this lens model is among the heaviest for standard zoom lenses. Needless to say, do not plan on traveling frequently with it or lugging it around for casual shooting. Sharpness and AF seems to be common issues with this lens, so keep that in mind when considering a purchase. Another uncertain factor is the price tag- some claim it is too high, while others claim it is just right.

Rating:  4.0 out of 5

Features

Featuring a rotation head system, the Canon EF Standard Zoom Lens boasts a focal length of 24-70mm (filter size of 77mm) and maximum aperture of1:2.8. The lens construction consists of 16 elements in 13 groups, and the lens itself offers a diagonal angle of view of 84° - 34°. The focus adjustment utilizes the front-focusing method, and the closest focusing distance is 0.38m/1.25 ft. Canon has room for improvement for this lens, and several consumers have expressed enthusiasm for an IS capability and improved sharpness.

Performance

For the most part, this lens performs to expectations, but in some cases falls a little short of complete satisfaction. The AF processor is fast and quiet, but several consumers have complained of inaccuracy and semi-sharpness. Low light situations are especially hindering, so if planning to shoot in such cases, you should consider purchasing a faster lens. Needless to say, if you are only able to get one lens, then this is definitely the one to get.

Summary

Overall, the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens is an expensive but worthy addition to the Canon SLR lens collection. Despite having autofocus and low-light issues, this model is among the best that a consumer can buy for a single, standard lens accessory. Needless to say, it is quite heavy, so if you plan to do traveling then you will want to consider a different model. All in all, this lens is a great product and aids your camera in capturing stunning images.

Pros

  • Powerful- improved lens design and new AF processor
  • Quality- high-quality elements ensure the best image capturing

Cons

  • Bulky- heavy, not for the traveling photographer
  • Problematic- minor autofocus and sharpness issues
  • Expensive- good value for lens but still pricey
