Canon EOS T1i: Review
Canon EOS Rebel T1i (EOS 500D) Review:

Canon just recently announced in 2009 the newest model in their lineup of Rebel entry-level DSLRs, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i Digital SLR (500D). Sold in kit form with a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (Image Stabilized) lens, the EOS Rebel T1i features a new 15.1MP digital image sensor and DIGIC 4 processor.

The camera also features full HD (1920x1080) video capture, an HDMI output for video and stills, and a 3.0 inch Clear View 920,000 dot LCD with Live View for stills and video. Live View focusing modes include Quick mode, Live mode and Face Detection AF mode. The camera is compatible with a wide range of EOS system camera accessories, including Canon EF and EF-S lenses. It features an ISO range of 100-3200 and a new intelligent Creative Auto mode for perfect pictures even if you're new to DSLRs.

Rating:  4.4 out of 5

Features

The EOS Rebel T1i includes most of the features you're likely to want in an entry-level DSLR. The Live View function, automatic sensor cleaning system and 3.0 inch LCD are pretty much standard in this price range. And the 15.1 megapixel sensor is best in class. But you'll have to rely on the lenses for image stabilization (like Nikon's offerings, there's no in-camera image stabilization), and the LCD monitor does not tilt-out and swivel. Also, the full HD mode only works at 20fps, you'll have to go down to 1280 x 720 pixels to get 30fps video.

Performance

The EOS Rebel T1i features acceptable performance in its class, with a burst rate of 170 images at 3.4fps, 9-point autofocus and 35-zone evaluative metering. Image quality is excellent with the kit lens, and noise only becomes a problem at the highest ISO settings. Battery life is a respectable 400 shots per charge, and the camera is small and lightweight, weighing in at barely over a pound. The limited 20fps HD video and lack of an articulated LCD make for 4 stars instead of 5 here.

Summary

The EOS Rebel T1i fits comfortably into the upper end of the crowded entry-level DSLR market. It delivers excellent quality images for the price, and compatibility with EOS accessories is a big plus. If you can live without a tilt and swivel LCD, and don't mind paying a bit more for lenses with image stabilization, then you definitely need to give the EOS Rebel T1i a test drive.
