Canon PIXMA iP2702 Inkjet Photo Printer: Review

The Canon PIXMA iP2702 Inkjet Photo Printer4103B022 is a new, budget model photo/document inkjet printer from Canon. It features up to 4800 x 1200 dpi color and 600 x 600 dpi black print resolution and print speeds up to 4.8 ipm in color and 7.0 ipm in black and white (ipm is a new printing speed standard - it is equal to the number of 4-page Excel, Word and PDF documents the printer can print in 1 minute).

Other features include 4 x 6 borderless photo printing in as little as 55 seconds and Auto Photo Fix II, which automatically categorizes the image into one of five types and chooses optimal settings for that type. The PIXMA iP2702 also features borderless photo printing up to 8.5" x 11", USB 2.0 connectivity and individual black and color ink cartridges. The printer uses the black cartridge for black and white printing only - the color cartridge features its own special black ink for printing quality images.

Rating:  3.6 out of 5

Value

The Canon PIXMA iP2702 represents an excellent value in a basic photo/document printer at its street price. Its 2-cartridge ink system should help save on the cost of disposables, and the performance is excellent for a printer in this price range. The Auto Photo II feature works surprisingly well and the included software contains some quite useful features. Document printing is fast and photo printing speed is more than acceptable at this price point. The PIXMA iP2702 should make an excellent all-around printer for home or light office use.

Performance

The PIXMA iP2702 doesn't come with a lot of frills. At this price, it's hard to complain, but there's no built-in memory card reader or network connectivity. It is possible to find these features in this price range. That being said, it does what it was designed to do surprisingly well - print high quality text and photos at more than acceptable speeds. And the included software is a plus - it is much more useful, especially for photo and web page printing, than that of most of the competition.

Summary

If you're in the market for a basic, all-around printer, the Canon PIXMA iP2702 makes a very good choice. Photo quality is excellent and print speed is fast in black and white and better than average in color. You can do better at this price on features, but you would be hard pressed to find better performance. All in all a very good offering from Canon.
