Canon PIXMA MX310: Review
Review: Canon PIXMA MX310 AIO Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax

The Canon PIXMA MX310 AIO Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax is a true AIO (all-in-one) printer targeted to the light/medium duty small or home office market. Its built-in ADF (automatic document feeder) and fax/modem place it squarely in the business class, while its lack of photo-friendly features keeps it out of the home market. It features acceptable printing, scanning and copying speeds and excellent paper handling capability.

The 1200 x 2400 dpi scan resolution coupled with a print resolution of 4800 x 1200 makes for excellent copies of color photos. And overall print speed is above average, at 22 ppm in black & white and 17 ppm In color. The built-in ADF, which holds up to 30 originals, makes for effortless copying, scanning and faxing. The built-in fax/modem is capable of sending and receiving Super G3 color faxes.

Rating:  4.0 out of 5

Value

The MX310 represents an excellent value, with some high-end features at a low-end price. The ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) and built-in fax modem are usually available only on higher priced models. Canon is known for quality printers, and the MX310 is handsome as well, with a slick, streamlined look. Print resolution and speed are good for a printer in this price range. The two-cartridge ink system helps keep ink cost to a reasonable value, although all printers could use some help in this area.

Features

The MX310 a little short on photo features, but the built-in PictBridge interface allows you to print photos from your PictBridge compatible camera while recharging it. The ability to print from memory cards or USB sticks is noticeably absent. The ADF really streamlines paper handling, but lacks duplex capability - you have to manually turn the pages to produce double-sided documents. Also, a second paper tray would have been nice. And for a printer in the business class, the absence of network connectivity could be a show-stopper. One plus in the feature department is the ability to store up to 50 incoming faxes before printing.

Summary

The PIXMA MX310 represents a solid value in a small business printer if your budget is near the low end. If you need network connectivity, advanced paper handling or photo features, however, you'll need to step up a notch from this model. If you don't need these features, the MX310 would make a great medium duty workhorse for your home business or small business.

  • 30 page ADF (Automatic Document Feeder)
