Canon PowerShot SD980 IS: Review

Canon PowerShot SD980 IS: Review
Canon PowerShot SD980 IS review:

If you need a sleek digital camera with impressive image enhancement and zoom capabilities, then consider the Canon PowerShot SD980 IS. Not only does this 12.1 megapixel camera offer features such as 720p HD video capture and HDMI output, but it also includes a Canon first, a 3.0 inch touch panel LCD display. This virtually eliminates the need for navigating confusing menus via the control buttons. Although this model has its shortcomings, overall it is a well-designed camera that performs nicely for just about any consumer.

The Canon PowerShot SD980 IS measures approximately 0.93 x 2.10 x 0.90 inches and weighs a light 4.59 ounces. The price tag may mislead some consumers into believing that this model is better than other similar PowerShot series cameras, but the high price is primarily a result of the exclusive touch panel display. The 5x ultra-wide, image stabilized zoom is definitely attractive, but there are similarly-priced cameras with 12x zoom available. This particular model is a great camera to consider, but don't forget to compare prices and features of other digital cameras prior to purchase.

Rating:  4.0 out of 5

Quality

Consumer experiences with this product have widely varied, but many people have been disappointed with the overall picture quality. This may be a result of shooting in tricky low-light situations, but some users claim that it is the result of the new Smart AUTO feature, which automatically selects settings for the camera based on 22 predefined shooting situations. Needless to say, if you are a non-professional who isn't picky about every pixel or lighting effect, this is a good camera to consider.

Value

For the price, the Canon SD980 IS sadly disappoints. The somewhat-difficult camera operation, combined with short battery life and poor low-light performance tends to deter consumers who have very little experience with digital cameras. Ergonomically, this camera is handled well, but in the technical realm, there is plenty of room for improvement. If you aren't easily bothered by the minor issues, then perhaps the PowerShot SD980 IS deserves your consideration. Keep in mind that the new touch panel technology may confuse novice users.

Summary

Overall, this is probably not the best digital camera for the price. The lack of features and image quality seems to steer many consumers to other cameras of the same price tier. Needless to say, if you are not picky about the minor problems, and you want the first of Canon's touch panel digital cameras, then this is definitely a nice camera to consider. Whether you prefer 12.1-megapixel stills or 720p HD video, this model does both. If you feel the need to pass on this product, then keep an eye for future, improved digital cameras of a more impressive caliber.

Pros

  • Sleek- ergonomic design is comfortable and easy to handle
  • Featured- 12.1-megapixel stills, 5x zoom, 720p HD video recording
  • Unique- integrated with Canon's first touch panel LCD camera display

Cons

  • Comparable- easily beat out by similarly-priced models
  • Questionable- price needs adjustment for features and quality
