Crosley CR248 : Review
Vinyl is far from dead and there a now a number of companies that are producing a digitally enhanced vinyl player for enthusiasts, the Crosley CR248 is one of these. The unit plays all 7, 10 and 12 inch versions of the vinyl record and can record them to a CD via internal CD burner capability. Additional functionalities include the ability to transfer cassettes to CD's, making this a good solution if you are looking to convert your old music collection onto CD's or digital formats.

The CR248 is available in three different wood finishes, paprika, oak and cherry and the unit itself is very well designed. The cover lifts up to reveal the turntable while all other functions are accessible via the control panels on the front or the side. AM/FM radio capability is also included, with sound output looked after by dynamic range stereo speakers that are built into the box. To add to the usability of the unit, a remote control is included, turning the CR248 into a handy stereo system that can look after your retro music collection.

Rating:  3.4 out of 5

Features

CD burning capability (both CD-R and CD/RW) from your vinyl records means that you can capture those vinyl moments into digital format. Vinyl playback is available for those who just wish to have a way to playback their vinyl's in a more compact environment. Three speeds of vinyl records can be played, the 33 1/3 RPM, along with the 45 and 78 RPM, making the unit very compatible for all types of records. Cassette playback and radio capabilities are also included and the unit has an Auxiliary output should you wish to hook it up to a large sound setup that you have in the home. The inclusion of a USB interface to record directly to USB format would have been a worthwhile addition.

Ergonomics

The overall design of the Crosley CR248 is what should appeal most, with the unique wood box style design staying true to the olden style look that many original turntables possessed. Being available in three finishes gives ultimate flexibility when choosing the right model for your home as well. The menu is easily accessible via the function buttons on the front of the unit and the cassette player is conveniently located on the side of the box.

Summary

If you have a large vinyl or cassette collection in need of a revamp for the digital age, the CR248 has most of the bases covered. It doubles as a player as well which handles all the sound requirements of cassettes and vinyl records. Design elements to be liked are the olden style look and the choice of wood finish. Value for money is a little lacking, so some shopping around may help you determine if this is the right model for your needs.
