Epson WorkForce 500: Review
Review: Epson WorkForce 500 AIO Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax

The Epson WorkForce 500 AIO Printer, Scanner, Copier, Fax represents a best of class value in the home office and small business AIO (all-in-one) printer market. With impressive performance and an even more impressive list of features, this workhorse is an unbeatable value for the price. About the only feature missing from this printer is network connectivity, but you can't beat the price.

The WorkForce 500 has a print speed of 33 ppm (B&W) and 31 ppm (color), and a resolution of 5760 x 1440 optimized dpi. This combined with the fast scan capability results in high-quality color copies at a rate of to 31 cpm. The unit features a built-in ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) that holds up to 30 sheets of paper and an input tray that holds up to 100 sheets. The built-in scanner furnishes scans at up to 1200 x 2400 hardware dpi. And there's a 2.5 inch color LCD that works in conjunction with interfaces for common memory cards and PictBridge compatible cameras and mobile camera phones.

Rating:  4.8 out of 5

Features

The features offered by this printer are almost unbeatable, especially at the price. It matches or exceeds the HP Photosmart C6380 and Canon PIXMA MX310 in almost every category. The only feature lacking is network connectivity - the HP has wired and wireless network connectivity but lacks the ADF, and the Canon lacks network connectivity as well. The WorkForce 500 uses a convenient and economical 4- cartridge (cyan, yellow, magenta, black) ink system. The built-in fax features color faxing capability and it can store up to 180 incoming faxes before printing and up to 60 speed dial numbers.

Performance

The rest of the specs are stellar, with 33 ppm print speed and color copies at 31 ppm - this machine has one of the fastest scanners available in an all-in-one. You can scan directly to memory cards and edit photos on memory cards as well in conjunction with the built-in 2.5 in. color LCD. The menu-driven front panel is self-explanatory, and the entire panel, including the LCD is slanted at a convenient viewing angle. The unit can print a 4 inch x6 inch borderless color photo in as little as 26 seconds.

Summary

You really can't beat this printer at the street price. The only problem might be if you need to connect to a network. Otherwise, sharing this printer from one of your PCs would be a good option just to take advantage of its excellent value. Epson is known for their quality and performance, and they have definitely lived up to their reputation with the WorkForce 500.
