Garmin Geko 201: Review
Garmin Geko 201 Review:

If you are tired of getting lost in the woods while on the occasional hike, yet you don't want to shell out a fortune to buy a top-of-the-line GPS, then the handheld Garmin Geko 201 GPS may be for you. This model is small, lightweight, and very easy to use. Though it lacks in features and has a fairly short battery life, this unique navigating device is sufficient for the infrequent day trekker. It does a good job for a price that competes with many other handhelds on the market today.

The sheer size of this device is amazingly small. It measures 1.9" x 3.9" x 0.96" in dimensions and weighs a meager 3.1 oz (batteries loaded). The black and white LCD display is 0.92" x 1.44" and supports a resolution of 64 x 100 pixels. This GPS is waterproof, but will not float. One fun feature in this model is the pre-loaded "games" you can play when you need to get a workout. It also comes with a cool hunting and fishing calendar, including sun and moon information. Technically, it's not meant to be a toy, but who says you can't have fun while roaming the woods?

Value

When people hear the words "handheld GPS," they automatically think of a device that costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Fortunately, this is not the case with the Garmin Geko 201. This model stands between the Geko 101 and Geko 301 models, so it has a balance of minimal features versus cost. It provides basic, handheld navigation that even claims to be more accurate than standard GPS devices. This particular model is perfect for beginners who just need something simple and easy to use.

Performance

If you are looking for a handheld GPS that is jam-packed with cool features, then don't bother to buy this one. It really embraces the term "bare bones" when it comes to maps, memory, and more. In fact, there are absolutely no maps preloaded, and you can't even add maps! There is no internal or external memory available, but you can save up to 500 waypoints and 20 routes. In addition, this GPS comes with Geko's TracBack feature, which allows you to retrace your steps if desired. You can also connect the device to your PC to transfer waypoints and tracks (cable not included). When it comes to GPS devices, you get what you pay for. This device lacks impressive features, but still provides excellent navigational capabilities for the occasional traveler.

Summary

Overall, you don't want to wander too far with this model. Some users have complained it does not work well at night or in the downtown city. One common complaint is that the power button switches on too easily and the battery life is short. There are some negatives to this product, but the positives beat out the negatives with an attractive price. If you are looking to buy your very first GPS and just need something small and basic, then this may be a good purchase. It is very easy to operate, comes with clear instructions, and gets the job done as far as navigating goes.

  • Lacks features but overall great for the price
