The Garmin GPSMAP 60 GPS is Garmin's latest hand-held GPS unit for land and marine applications. It features a built-in Americas base map with automatic routing capabilities and a 12-parallel channel GPS receiver. The receiver has 24MB of internal memory which can be used to store Garmin MapSource products such as BlueChart, 24K Topo and City Select, which provides detailed turn-by-turn directions for North American locations. The unit comes with a large 160x240 pixel, four-level grayscale display with LED backlight, USB and serial interfaces, and can store 1,000 user waypoints and 20 reversible routes. There's a handy trip computer that provides an odometer, stopped time, moving average, overall average, total time, max speed and more. Additional features include course and speed filtering, a fully gasketed case that is waterproof to a depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes and 28 hours of battery life on two AA batteries.
ValueThe GPSMAP 60 provides an excellent value for the money in a handheld, weatherproof GPS unit. It has most of the features you're likely to need in a handheld and is expandable as well, thanks to the extra built-in memory. There are no spoken directions, but this allows for the 28-hour battery life the unit offers. It has flexible waypoint and routing capabilities and can communicate with other navigational equipment using the NEMA protocol. ErgonomicsThe Garmin GPSMAP 60 is a rugged-looking unit in a handsome, streamlined housing. The weatherproofing is a big plus, and the large display and LED backlight make the unit easy to see under most lighting conditions. The user interface is very intuitive, with a four-way controller and function buttons for most of the major features. There's a comfortable rubber grip to hold on to as well.
