Garmin nuvi 1690: Review
Garmin nuvi 1690 review:

The next generation of GPS navigators are here and there are plenty of new features that Garmin have included in the Nuvi 1690. Most notable of these additions is the inclusion of a two year free data subscription for NuLink services. Bluetooth phone pairing is also available to allow your GPS to double as a hands free kit.

Garmin NuLink gives an dramatic increase in the amount of real time data that is available to your GPS. Google Local search provides access to real time information about services in the local area, while also giving detail on traffic alerts due to road constructions. Current fuel price download can be obtained, as can details on local weather as well as move times. Other services such as currency converter and flight status can be used to enhance the information the GPS can provide.

Rating:  3.4 out of 5

Value

As the Garmin nuvi 1690 is a relatively new model, it will exist in the top end price range of GPS models available on the market. Its value rating is also determined by just how much you intend to use the services that are provided by Garmins Nulink facility. Should you travel around a significant amount and need access to real-time information about local facilities, movies and fuel prices, the value that is included with 2 years free data service should not be understated. If however, this is your first GPS and you simply need assistance in navigating around, the Nulink subscription will most likely be overkill.

Features

With a 4.3inch widescreen display capable of 480 x 272 pixel resolution, screen visibility should not be a problem in transit. There is a high sensitivity receiver on the Nuvi 1690 to help ensure you always stay connected for up to date location information. Connectivity to your PC or MAC is achieved by the USB interface and there is facility to install a microSD card for additional storage capacity. Up to 1000 waypoints or favorites can be stored, as well as up to 10 custom routes. Lane assist technology will help guide the driver to the correct lane that is needed for each particular journey.

Summary

The widescreen visibility and lane assist technology do help make the Garmin Nuvi 1690 a worthwhile purchase for anyone new to GPS navigators. Free data subscription to NuLink services will mean that even if they are seldom used, no additional charges will be incurred. Deciding whether the increased price range is worth the list of additional features should be the determining factor when looking at buying.

Pros

  • Lane Assist Technology
  • Supports microSD cards
  • 2 year free data subscription
  • Widescreen display

Cons

  • Overkill for first time user
