The Hewlett Packard (HP) Mini 1035NR Netbook FT313UA#ABA is HP's latest entry into the fairly recent "netbook" category - smaller than a notebook but larger than a handheld device. And as usual when it comes to making mobile devices, HP has done their homework in designing this device. The 1035NR features a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor with a 533 MHz FSB, 1 GB of ram, an Intel Graphics media accelerator 950 with up to 128MB total shared memory, and a 60GB hard drive. The unit also features excellent connectivity options - Integrated Ethernet, 802.11b/g WLAN and Bluetooth. For storage options there's a 2 in 1 digital media reader for Secure Digital and MultiMedia cards, and a USB thumb drive port. The unit measures a compact 10.3 x 6.56 x .99 inches and weighs in at a deft 2.38 lbs. The unit also features an integrated sound card with built-in speakers. The keyboard is surprisingly roomy for a device this size, with plenty of room for touch-typists. The extra room comes at the expense of a rather small touchpad, however. The unit ships with Windows XP Home SP3 installed. The screen is also roomy for a product this size, at 10.2-inches and 1024 X 600 pixels.
ValueThe HP Mini 1035NR gets high marks in the value category - it's surprisingly affordable and packs a lot of features into a very small package. The price is comparable or even less than some of the competition. In fact the only similar units that are priced less are Linux-based. If you don't already have one, you'll need to invest in a hefty USB thumb drive or media card to install your personal application software and to move data around. But since prices are dropping dramatically on this type of storage, this is not much of an issue. Besides you may already have a large enough thumb drive. FeaturesThe HP Mini 1035NR scores well in this category as well, not for the sheer amount of features but for the number of features packed into such a small package. A DVD drive would be nice, but it's just not possible (yet) to pack one into a device this size, at least not at a reasonable price. The unit has all the connectivity and storage features you're likely to use, and the keyboard and screen are useable enough for this to be your only (mobile) PC. Processor speed, memory capacity and hard drive size are nice, too. SummaryAs you can see from the ratings, this is an impressive device. And it comes with HP's reputation for making durable, high-quality portable devices - they're one of the best in the business at this. And the price compared to features makes this product an excellent value for the money. Highly recommended if you are in the market for an ultra-portable PC that's actually usable for everyday needs.
