HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx: Review

The decision that is faced when buying a new notebook is just how much dedicated hardware you are willing to sacrifice in order to get value for money. HPs Pavilion dv4-2165dx model is one which you will have to weigh up which elements are critical to your day to day computing needs and then make your purchase based up on that.

The dv4-2165dx uses the Intel Core i3-330m processor which is a lower end CPU than the Core 2 DUO's, but also means less power consumption for extended battery life. Additional integrated features of the dv4-2165dx include the Intel HD Graphics shared memory video card that borrows RAM, which could be used by the operating system, to produce graphics. This is an efficient way of graphics display for general tasks such as web browsing and word processing, but for any game playing or video editing, there will be limitations.

Rating:  3.6 out of 5

Features

Connectivity is where the dv4-2165dx excels, with a 5-in-1 digital media reader included that supports SD, Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro, and XD picture cards. There are 3 USB 2.0 connections into the laptop, with one being a shared eSATA port for added data transfer to compatible external devices such as hard drives. There is a HDMI graphics output for increased display to external monitors as well as an ExpressCard/54 slot that can support ExpressCard/34 devices as well. A lightscribe SuperMulti 8x DVD+R/RW with Double layer Support disc burner is included to add additional functionality for CD/DVD burns.

Performance

4GB of DDR3 is included, in a 2x2GB configuration, an adequate amount of system memory for a Notebook that is pre installed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. The 500GB hard drive spins at 7200RPM which is a step up from previous models where the lower end 5400 RPM drives where the staple. Graphics resolutions are supported up to a 1280 x 800 resolution on the 14.1inch widescreen HD display, though any usage above standard graphics output will require a change to the graphics hardware to support the more intense nature that 3D graphics or video editing has.

Summary

There is value for money in the Pavilion dv4-2165dx and that is an aspect that should come into consideration when purchasing a new notebook. For everyday computing this notebook will be more than sufficient, a worthwhile upgrade for anyone moving from a machine that is more than 3 years old. There are some sacrifices that are being made for value and should be considered when comparing different models that are available.
