iomega eGo Helium Portable Hard Drive 34614: Review

If you need an ultra-thin, ultra-lightweight external hard drive, perhaps to match your MacBook Air notebook, then consider the iomega eGo Helium Portable Hard Drive 34614. This tiny drive is great for travel- it fits in any briefcase or purse and weighs less than a pound. It should not be underestimated, though, because it can hold up to 1,280,000 photos, 5,920 hours of music, or 480 hours of video. Although you can find higher-capacity hard drives for roughly the same price, it is somewhat difficult to find such an ultraportable drive like this with this price tag.

Measuring at a mere .63" x 3.45" x 4.75" and weighing .44 lbs, the Iomega eGo Helium is surprisingly compact, considering the drive capacity is more than some notebooks offer. Even more impressive is the tough and sturdy design that holds this external drive together. This model features rugged Drop Guard technology for durability and to protect against falls. If you need something small but sufficient, then you should definitely consider this 320GB hard drive.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Performance

In order to save space and eliminate the need for an A/C adapter, Iomega used a downsized 5400rpm hard drive. Although this drive does support USB 2.0, if high-performance is a must, then you will have to sacrifice size and purchase the larger, 7200rpm model. Overall, hard drive performance is quite smooth, and operations are seamless with either Windows or Mac operating systems (HFS+ formatted for Mac). Even after the occasional drop, the 320GB Iomega Helium continues to perform.

Ergonomics

The size and sleek design of this ultraportable hard drive is hard to beat. It weighs less than a pound and can fit in just about any briefcase, purse, or bag without worry. Even more amazing is the fact that it offers 320GB capacity- more than some laptops. Of course, for the same price you can get a 500GB hard drive; however, you won't find a higher-capacity hard drive in this size. Eventually, we may see future 500GB and 1TB models replacing this one, but for now the Iomega Helium will have to do.

Summary

Overall, this iomega eGo Helium 320GB (34614) is compact and lightweight- perfect for any on-the-go computer user. And since it is already pre-formatted for Mac and matches the MacBook Air, you may want to consider the Iomega Helium as a specialty for your Mac. Drive performance may not be as impressive as 7200rpm or FireWire models, but all-in-all this is a great hard drive. If you're tight on space and need storage for a reasonable price, then consider the 320GB Iomega Helium USB 2.0 external hard drive. With it, you gain a good amount of storage capacity, along with peace of mind.

Pros

  • Compact- sleek and lightweight for the traveling computer user
  • Durable- features Drop Guard protection for resistance to drops and falls
  • Compatible- pre-formatted for Mac but also works with Windows well
  • Capable- offers 320GB storage space to hold thousands of photos, music, and videos

Cons

  • Cons- lack of FireWire and small size means slower but still acceptable performance
