Konica Autoreflex T4: Review

Konica Autoreflex T4 Review:

The Konica Autoreflex T4 35mm camera was introduced in 1978. The base plate for the camera is made of metal and not plastic, as on other models of Konica cameras. This full-featured SLR camera offers shutter speeds of 1 second to 1/1000 second plus Bulb, a depth-of-field preview and a multiple exposure provisions. It is also possible to attach an external motor drive, which can shoot up to two framers per second.

This 35mm SLR has a bright viewfinder and split-image focusing screen with a microprism collar. The camera is designed to be used extensively and holds up well to rugged handling. The Copal CCS-M shutter works even in very cold weather. This model uses 2 of the old PX625 batteries to run the light meter.

Rating:  3.8 out of 5

Quality

The fully mechanical Autoreflex T4 takes great photographs and has a solid body. It is not as heavy as its predecessor the T3N and has a sleeker, more modern look and feel. The camera is solid, but uses more plastic body parts than previous models. The black plastic for the top cover and the prism housing holds up well and is very sturdy, but the leatherette sometimes shrinks. This shrinkage is a purely cosmetic problem and does not affect the performance of the camera and can be easily and affordably replaced.

Features

The viewfinder of the Autoreflex T4 was improved in this model from previous models. It's brighter and doesn't have the blueish tinge of earlier models. It is also bright and clear and comes with split-image focusing with microprism collar. The indication of shutter speed in the viewfinder is not found on the Autoreflex T4 however the aperture is available. The light meter on the Autoreflex T4 is more fragile, than other Konica models. The camera uses mercury oxyde batteries for the light meter, which replacements are no longer made, for environmental reasons. You can find alternate batteries, however they may cause incorrect meter readings for a variety of reasons.

Summary

Konica produced some cameras in their "big" Autoreflex series that take great photographs and are large and nearly indestructible. The Autoreflex T4 is a smaller, lighter camera that feels more modern and includes a bright and clear viewfinder. The Konica Autoreflex T4 is a fully mechanical SLR camera that is light and bright and takes great photographs. Making a decision about the size and features on the camera you're looking for is a matter of taste.

Pros

  • Takes great photographs
  • Sleek, light and modern
  • Bright and clear viewfinder
  • Sturdy body design

Cons

  • May have a fragile light meter
