LaCie Little Disk 301860: Review
LaCie Little Disk 301860 : Review

Lacie's Little Disk 301860 has been designed for the portable user in mind, with a protective cap used to cover the USB ports. This protective cap clips into place fairly easily, giving a sleek look to the unit when it is not in use. The Little Disk range is designed by Sam Hecht, so there are some difference in appearance with other units in the Lacie external drive range.

Primarily, the Little Disk range should be seen as the hard drive that you would use to move data from one system to another. The 301860 is a 500GB capacity drive that comes with USB 2.0 connection. It has an all white exterior which adds a different look to the standard black casing that most external drives on the market possess. It has been certified to work with both Mac OSX 10.6 and Windows 7 making it a good backup choice no matter your operating system.

Rating:  3.2 out of 5

Features

LacieSync software is included with this drive which gives added ease of use when completing backups and file transfers across multiple system. The software allows you to sync up your data and emails to any machine with the software installed. Also available is a One Year online backup facility free of charge, with an unlimited storage amount. Once you have registered an account, encrypted copies of your backup data is stored at a central LaCie backup center for those times when your drive may stop working or get lost.

Performance

The standard USB 2.0 connection that is included on this drive only manages to achieve a burst transfer rate of approximately 30-35MB/s. The speeds that would be available from the inclusion of a Firewire or eSata connection would make this drive a more attractive purchase, but for a portable hard drive that won't be used for too much large file transfer, the Little Disk 301860 should do the job. USB boost technology is made available via an installed driver, giving an increase of around 33% in overall USB performance.

Summary

Though the omission of a faster Firewire or eSata interface is disappointing, there is still a use for the Little Disk 301860 in a casual home user environment. The drive stores up to 500gb of data which is more than enough and the 1 year online backup gives added security that your data will always be available should something go awry with the drive.

Pros

  • Sleek design
  • Protective cap for connections
  • LacieSync software
  • 1 Year free online backup

Cons

  • No Firewire or eSata
