LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 301952: Review

If you need an ultra-compact hard drive with ultra capacity, then consider the 1TB LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 301952 external hard drive, which offers a high-performance disk storage solution for a fairly reasonable price. Not only is it compatible with most Windows operating systems, but Mac users can enjoy the benefits of this hard drive too. The latest USB 3.0 specification allows for an interface bandwidth of 5Gb/s (600MB/s), which is ten times faster than its predecessor. If you need a fast external hard drive but do not want a heavy or large device, then this is probably one drive to consider.

Measuring approximately 2.9" x 4.6" x 0.74" and weighing 6.7 oz, the LaCie Rikiki features a sleek, aluminum chassis that is slightly thicker than competing slim-drives, but quite acceptable for its disk capacity. This model features a power port (cable and adapter not included), but it is not necessary unless you want the fastest speeds. It is also backward compatible with the USB 2.0 specification, in case your system is not up to par. Overall, for the price, the Rikiki is a good hard drive; however, users on a budget may want to consider the less expensive 500GB model.

Rating:  4.6 out of 5

Value

LaCie's exclusive 2-Year Warranty, followed by one year of free 10GB online storage, helps balance the cost of the Rikiki. Many consumers will also find the included software quite helpful. Needless to say, there are other external terabyte hard drives that are competitive in price, so if you are on a strict budget then this may not be the drive for you. Overall, we find that this particular model would be great for business professionals or home users who need a fortified and dependable storage solution.

Performance

The new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 specification allows for blazing-fast file transfers- that is, if you take advantage of the power port. Most slim-line hard drives operate at a 5400RPM speed unless you use the auxiliary plug for extra power. Needless to say, even at default speeds, this particular 1TB model is quite fast. Performance is reliable and consistent, and thanks to the sturdy drive exterior, even minor drops are not likely to damage your data.

Summary

LaCie is well known for their stylish, durable, and flexible storage solutions. The 1TB LaCie Rikiki USB 3.0 301952 external hard drive is a great step-up from the 500GB model, and aside from being slightly thicker it performs equally well. Not only is it compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems, but it is also backward-compatible with USB 2.0 in case your system does not yet support the newest specification. Probably the only complaint one would have is that the price is relatively higher than competing drives, but when you factor in all the extras then this is definitely a drive to consider.

Pros

  • Resistant- exclusive protective aluminum design
  • Compact- slim-line and only slightly thicker than 500GB model
  • Future-proof- features latest USB 3.0 specification for ultra-speeds
  • Support- backed by two-year warranty; 10GB online storage for one year

Cons

  • Pricey- costs relatively higher than other terabyte hard drives
