Logitech Harmony 1100: Review
If you need the ultimate universal remote, then look no further than the Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote. Although this award-winning gadget is expensive, it is one of the most versatile and intelligent devices you can purchase for your living room. Ranked as the top-tier model in Logitech's Harmony series, this remote can control up to 15 devices via its intuitive 3.5" color touch screen. If you want more of the traditional "remote" style-device or you cannot afford this model, then you may want to step down a few levels.

This advanced rechargeable remote is not as ergonomic as previous models- it is roughly as square as a piece of bread and as thick as two slices. With support for over 5,000 brands and more than 225,000 devices, the Logitech Harmony 1100 is simply hard to beat in regards to flexibility, controllability, and compatibility. If you have a complex entertainment center setup and don't mind paying the 1100's expensive price tag, then by all means this is the remote for you.

Rating:  3.6 out of 5

Value

Paying several hundred dollars for a remote control is very daunting for some consumers, and the Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced is a tricky decision for most. Even the lowest model in the Harmony series costs over a $100, so the choice among models here is primarily determined by how many devices you wish to control. The Harmony 510 controls up to 5 devices, but the Harmony 1100 Advanced controls up to 15. If you have a simple setup that consists of a DVD player and HDTV, then you may want to consider a lower model. But if you have an array of devices with frustrating controls, then you should definitely look at this universal remote control.

Features

With a higher price tag comes better features, and this device is no exception. Not only does it allow up to 15 electronics to be configured and controlled, but it also supports behind-the-cabinet-door devices that operate using the RF control standard. In addition, rather than include a charging cable or cradle, this model features an easy-to-use docking station. Most impressive about the Logitech Harmony 11000 Advanced is its incredibly-deep range of customizations that a user may perform with a simple touch of the screen.

Summary

Because the Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote Control is more technically-challenging than many other remotes, you may want to consider a lower model. Setup time takes nearly an hour at minimum, and users can become easily confused along the way. If you prefer the more traditional shape and size remote, then this one is not for you. If you have a restricted budget, then you will definitely want to consider a different remote. But if you are a fast learner, have a flexible budget, and a lot of complex devices to control, the Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced may be right for you.

Pros

  • Advanced- controls 15 devices via 3.5" color touch screen
  • Compatible- works with 5,000+ brands and 225,000+ devices
  • Customizable- easy setup but advanced customizations are tricky
  • Expensive- same features as others except bigger screen and RF

Cons

  • Untraditional- shaped like bread and requires Internet access for setup
