Magellan RoadMate 1412 - North America: Review
Magellan RoadMate 1412 Review:

The Magellan RoadMate 1412 North America GPS is a complete, pocket-sized GPS with a 4.3" color interactive touch screen. It's loaded with 6 million points of interest and maps for all of the US, Puerto Rico and Canada. It's stylishly thin and compact, yet full-featured. You get spoken turn-by-turn directions with Magellan's SayWhere text-to-speech technology,

The advanced QuickSpell feature assists with searches for locations and points of interests by giving you a list of available locations to choose from. SmartDetour helps you to route around sudden slow or stopped freeway traffic and automatically re-calculates the fastest detour. The built-in rechargeable battery provides for up to 3 hours of operation, so the 1412 is ideal for those city trips with lots of walking around. The 1412 also features a very intuitive user interface that includes interactive point of interest icons and a home button that you can program to return to any location immediately.

Rating:  4.6 out of 5

Value

The Magellan 1412 provides a lot of features in a compact design at a very reasonable price. There's no PC connectivity, but the maps are stored on an SD card, providing upgrade capability. The unit is lightweight, too, at only 7.1 ounces with battery. The huge POI database and North American maps, spoken turn-by-turn directions and intuitive menus add to the value. The unit also comes with a vehicle power adapter and usable windshield mount.

Ergonomics

The Magellan 1412 does well in this category, thanks to its very usable WQVGA screen and intuitive user menus. Maps can be displayed in 2D or 3D, and the interactive POI icons make identifying points of interests an easy task. The small, thin design means the 1412 can easily be slipped into a loose pants pocket, and it won't weigh you down, either. The 1412 measures only 4.57" x 3.27" x 0.73".

Summary

If you're on a budget and looking for a full-featured North American GPS, give the Magellan 1412 a try. It has a large screen for its small size, and has most of the features you'll need for travel in North America. It's one of the most reasonably priced pocket-sized GPS system with spoken turn-by-turn directions, and navigating is a breeze with the excellent user interface.
