Magellan RoadMate 1470 review:

The Magellan RoadMate 1470 GPS navigator comes with a OneTouch favorites menu to give better access to personalized information that is stored on the GPS. Through the touchscreen interface, saved points of interest can be accessed and the 4.7inch color screen makes viewing information while in transit, easier.

Traffic link is a live onscreen traffic notification service that can be added into the RoadMate 1470; it is available as a separate accessory. For consumers with AAA membership, there are added benefits that can be found in this GPS. AAA Tourbook is available for members of AAA which provides ratings and descriptions on accommodation and restaurants near the current location. Further enhancements for AAA members include a Roadside Assistance menu, which includes contact details and current GPS location.

Rating:  3.2 out of 5

Features

The Magellan 1470 includes standard GPS functionality such as spoken street names and directions to help with navigation, while the highway lane assist functionality is also of great benefit. Lane assist helps with routes that go through busy highways and interchanges, ensuring you are in the correct lane to make the exit or turn that is needed. Route optimization and multi destination routing give some added flexibility in planning a journey, allowing for customization of stops along the way, and more efficient route choices. RoadMate 1470 is pre loaded with maps for the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico, with additional maps available via the Magellan website.

Ergonomics

With an intuitive menu interface, the Magellan 1470 gps gives easy touchscreen access to the functions of the GPS for route editing while driving. The Highway exit POI search is another additional menu feature that will show gas stations and hotels near your current location. The Auto night view feature adjusts the GPS screen automatically for color and contrast depending on the light that is currently available. The RoadMate 1470 is a slim line GPS, measuring at 0.7 inches deep and weighing a mere 10 ounces.

Summary

It's a slim, lightweight GPS that will serve all basic in car GPS navigation needs. For more advanced functions such as Bluetooth pairing, higher end models are available. It's in the right price range and Magellan have chosen to target this model directly at those of us on the road all the time with the inclusion of the AAA membership features. It also comes with a large screen for easy viewing and preloaded with maps of United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.
