Nikon Coolpix S1000pj: Review
Nikon Coolpix S1000pj review:

Ever felt the immediate need to reminisce after taking some holiday snaps? Get yourself a Nikon Coolpix S1000pj and you have both a camera and a projector in one. This is the first time a digital camera has been developed with a built in projector and it remains to be seen whether it will be the last. Functionally it is a great idea, but in the era of portable media and email, the need for a home slide show is probably a bit outdated.

The S1000pj has an inbuilt projector that is capable of displaying your pictures up onto a wall or projector screen at will. Once you purchase the unit it comes with a mounting stand and a wireless remote control for easy use. It weighs a relatively light 5.5ounces which is small considering its projector capability. The unit measures 2.5 inches high and 4inches wide making it slightly larger than other digital cameras that are around. The Coolpix S1000pj is due for release after August 2009.

Rating:  3.2 out of 5

Features

There is 12.1 megapixels available for quality image capture and a 5x zoom lens that will get you nice and close to your subject. The projection capability is anywhere from 5 to 40inches, so it is suitable to project your pictures on the wall for everyone to see. Image stabilization also helps keep the image steady to remove any human element on the shot. Subject tracking is also a neat feature that allows you to automatically track certain people within your photos for more effective focus of the subject you want. It comes with a 2.7inch LCD monitor to easily navigate the menus.

Ergonomics

Overall design of the unit is quite good, with Nikon managing to keep the depth of unit down to just 0.9inches. It is available only in black, making your choice of colors limited. The real markdowns come from the lack of design forethought around including a projection capability. Yes it might be a nifty feature that you play with in the beginning, but its long term uses are minimal, if not non existent. Why bother projecting from your camera, when you can hook it up to your LCD TV and get a better look at everything, including more vivid color display.

Summary

Despite its other features, the projection capability of the S1000pj really makes you ask why. There is plenty of capacity right now to send digital copies of whatever you need around to your friends, so would you really feel the need to subject them to a projection show? If you are after a digital camera, get a digital camera. If you are after a projector, buy a dedicated one. Mixing the two lacks reason.
